Live Rock Rubble as Substrate?

Is this ok? A friend of mine that im helping get his 55 gallon tank together has a bunch or rubble as his substrate. Is that ok?
Also there is a rock in there that is all red in color.
Is there usualy a red color rock in a batch of live rock? Its light red not like red algae or anything.

it will indeed. the key to natural filtration is bacteria and the key to large bacterial populations is surface area. can't beat fine sand for max surface area. in addition, the small size and smoothness of fine sand grains encourages the benthic life, bristleworms and the like, you need to deal with the detritus. Some rubble on top of the substrate is fine for aesthetic reasons and for fragging, but as the substrate itself no. crushed coral creates the same problems, as I found out the hard way :(

What about the red colored rock? Ive never seen that color rock its all like a dull red color. I remember when the guy setup his tank i was a little weary of the red colored rock. Its not algae its 100% red.
