Live Rock

My tank is quickly becoming covered with algae. I need to set up a QT fast for snails and hermits. Would putting a piece of live rock from the main tank carry enough beneficial bacteria over to the QT? Thanks.

Why do you need to move them? Algae is a result of high nutrients and the inverts most likely wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t care either way. Better maintenance and filtration will fight the algae away.

However, if you are intent on moving them for some other reason you didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t mention then if you use water from your tank and a few pounds of LR with water movement and heater then yes, it should be fine.

Moving them? Not sure what you mean by that. I want to buy hermits and snails then put them in my QT tank then put them in my main tank. I have no idea where this algae came from. I used RO water to fill the tank, I use RO water to topoff, I have NO fish or inverts yet, I have only 192 watt of light, and my rocks were already cured from a previous system so I had no cycle. My tank was up and running for 2 months before this algae started appearing about two weeks ago.

your first post implies you have inverts in your tank, and because you have algae you want to QT them. At least that is what I took it to say when i first read it.

yeah a Piece of LR from your tank would work. But if you have no fist or LR in your main why not just put them in the main directly?

Sorry about that. I see why Maxxumless said what he said now. I do have 100+ of live rock in teh main tank so maybe I should have said that I haven't bought any fish, coral, or a cleanup crew yet.

Is this a new tank setup? All new tanks get algae. Test your water maybe the tank is ready for a cleanup crew. If not just wait the algae is just apart of the cycling of a new tank. I personally have never QT'ed snails and such. I don't see the point of it. I just use QT for fish to be sure they are desease free, healthy, and comfortably eating before they go into the display tank.

My rocks were already cured from a previous system so I had no cycle. My tank was up and running for 2 months before this algae started appearing about two weeks ago. I heard you should QT everything wet. Snails and hermits can carry flatworms from what I've read and heard.

In order to recieve any meaningful help you need to post ALL of your tank information, Water params, what type of skimmer, are you using RODI water, are there any fish in the tank? etc...etc

Okay. I've already posted half of those. I said that I have NO fish or inverts other than what's living in the 100+ pounds of live rock. I already said that I filled the tank with RO water and use RO water for topoffs. And that I have 192 watts of PC lighting.

Now for the new info that is needed: I have a Remora Pro protein skimmer with a Mag 3 pump. I checked the parameters two weeks ago and they were:

p.H. - 8.2
Nitrites - 0
Nitrate - 0
Ammonia - 0
Salinity - 1.022

I asked about RODI water because there is a difference. Are we talking "Grocery Store" RO water, or are we talking RODI water with a tds reading of zero.

Secondly...Yes, you do have inverts...Snails and hermits to best of my knowledge are inverts.

Sorry I bothered you by asking for additional information. Good luck with your algae problem.

Wow! Why are you getting so mad? I didn't mind giving you additional info. I'm looking for help and any response is good. I didn't buy any snails or hermits. I wanted to setup a QT for snails and hermits. I do know that snails and hermits are inverts but I didn't know that there was a difference between RO and RODI water. I have bought my RO water from the grocery store, bottled. The bottled water company told me their waater is processed using reverse osmosis, activated carbon, media filtration, micro filtration, ozonation, and ultraviolet light. I figured that would have a zero tds reading.

Greg,

I agree QT'ing everything wet, but in your case since there's no fish yet, just put the inverts in. If there's any ich cysts attached to the shells of the inverts (possible), then they rupture, the parasites will die because there's no fish to host. I don't think you'll introduct anything bad otherwise.

Even though you had cured rock and didn't see an ammonia or nitrite cycle, there are other "cycles" that your tank will go through, and various algaes will come and go. If you're seeing brown stuff all over your rocks, it's likely diatoms, which will disappear as fast as they appeared.

Hope this helps.

Guitarfish is correct about your tank going through several cycles as it matures. Don't let a cycle scare you. Once your tank cycles good a cleanup crew should keep it clean.

I took my TDS meter to the grocery store today to check out the reading from the machine that has all the thing s greg mentioned. I was surprised! 65!!! I didn't hink it would be 0 but I didn't think it would be that high. I live in CA, and with all the rain my septic leach field is saturated so Iwas looking for an alternate for my RODI. My water after RODI is 0 to 2.(PPM) Anyway.... algae happens....grocery store water is better than tap but can be improved on.... no need to QT crabs or snails.
