live sand and rock for a quarantine tank

Hello.
I am planning to house all new fish in a quarantine tank for 3-4 weeks.does the tank need live sand and rock and cycling similar to the display tank? I would think yes for beneficial bacterial growth. but then I read an article recommending not to put live rock and substrate , lest copper (given for ich) may react with the calcium carbonate in them.
can someone clarify please. if i dont use rock and sand, how will ammonia and nitrite be metabolized.
thank you.

I do not use live rock/sand in the QT. I have done a QT on some wrasses that like to sleep in the sand, in this case I will use a Tupperware container with sand.

Some folks will use a filter sponge or something similar that has been populated with bacteria. I personally do not cycle a QT and rely on Water changes and seachem prime to deal with any ammonia.

What are your intentions with your QT??? Will you use it just for observation or will you proactively treat your fish's. the answer may help to figure out what is best for you.

I would also suggest looking into the Tank Transfer Method (TTM) for ich, look at the sticky above the big red arrow on the forum page.
