Live Sand straight from the ocean

Do you know what was in that sand before you put it in your tank? Theres no way. So wouldnt you think it would be a bad idea to put something in your tank that you didnt know the makeup of?

Interesting question .. having lived on/near the Ocean for most of my life and directly collecting my own sand - I suspect I know whats in my Ocean sand alot more than you know whats in the sand you purchased at your store. Never have understood why people believe that sand that has been placed in a bag somehow has become better than the sand was immediately before it was placed into the bag. Do you know where your sand came from? Do you think they somehow "purify" your sand or immaculately clean those big loaders they use to move the sand around prior to bagging? Do you have any clue on where you sand is collected, how it is treated, bagged etc.

Not trying to be offensive but this "theme" is often repeated on this and other forums by people who somehow think that everything that comes from the Ocean is polluted ... not giving a second thought to where the sand they paid big bucks for comes from.

Do you have links to the thread that support sand from the ocean use?

Dr. Ron Shimek has commented on using Ocean Sand in many (perhaps hundreds) of posts ... just use the search feature and narrow the search down to his old forum (think they renamed it to the invert forum?)

I'm seeing some valids points. The mention about do we really know where the live sand is coming from is indeed a hell of a point.

While I have used Ocean sand for many years ... there are plenty of places in the USA where using Ocean sand would not make much sense. For example ... the recent series of hurricanes in the Gulf region have created some environmental issues that would make me wary of using that sand (even though some of that same sand might have been considered fine not so long ago). Just use your brains and a certain amt. of caution.
