local glass shops ?

I pass a custom glass shop everyday on the way to work in Darien. It's on Lemont Rd just north of 83rd. I can't think of the name of the place but I can get it and post back tonight sometime.

I just took the phone book and called the closest guy, I needed some partitions made for a sump. For the overflow, I would guess you want slit's cut into the glass? I think you could get it done at most any glass shop, if you stop in and describe exactly what you are looking for. If you can't find it in the city, the place I go to is Lombard Glass...you can find them in the good ol yellow pages :).

Thanks guy's, I'm going to hit up a couple places in my neighborhood but I'm not very confident in my DIY skills.

Does anyone know where I can buy a pre-made corner or center overflow? I emailed barraquatic but haven't heard back from them. That may be the way I go if this doesn't work out as planned.

thanks mbunaman, I called them and will be putting in an order tomorrow morning to pick up that glass tomorrow afternoon.
I'm getting 1/4" thick for the overflow. Does that sound about right?

Pat, give Doug Lehman a call. Why glass, go acrylic. He made 2 for my 300 1/2" thick w/ a handle . now I dont have to worry, fish wandering on the other side plus cuts down the noise.

Also if you really want nice edges on the glass get them polished. They usually swipe them so you dont cut your fingers. The polished edges are sweet.

Menard,

How is the acrylic attached to the glass?

NewSchool

Are the cutting the slit in the glass? I was looking for the same thing.

I thought acrylic to glass was a no no? Either way, I need it by this weekend. I wish I knew b/c I would def. go to Doug for something like this. The 24 Cube didn't work, I got an Oceanic 30 gallon yesterday and say "F" to JBJ!!! Should have listened to everyone . .

Acrylic doesnt bond to glass very well, but will usually work well enough if there isnt alot of pressure.. I wouln't replace a panel on a glass tank with acrylic, but for a standard overflow, you should be OK. I dont know if I would trust the acrylic glued to glass in a horizontal overflow. There may be too much pressure pushing upward.

I agree with Rod. Here is a suggestion. My buddy's tank was a Glass Cages tank and they built their overflows out of glass and my buddy got a black acrylic cover with notches to go over the glass overflow. So make sure if you go that route to make the height a little lower so the acrylic cover with the notches is like an inch taller than the glass overflow.

The overflow is going into a 30 gallon cube. It's going to be 10" long 4" deep and come out 5". The Calfo horizontal overflow.
I'm not cutting teeth into it, a think layer of water should flow over the three sides.

Wow, Doug at Torstenson Glass really tried to jam me with this quote. I asked for a 10" x 4" piece, one 10" x 5" piece and (2) 5" x 3 3/4" pieces. The Greylite glass goes for $12.09 a sq. foot. I also asked for a quote for my buddies glass with aprox. the same dimensions. Nothing fancy on the edge, just buffed so I won't cut myself.

Quote came in at $52.71 for each order!!!! You can make all these cuts with 3 square feet and room to spare and he was charging for 8 sq. feet. I called to see what was up and negotiate but he was unwilling to budge from his quote.

I understand everyone has to make a profit but that's ridiculous.

I'm sure the Greylite is more expensive, I was willing to pay for that. But to charge me for 1 sq. foot for each cut piece no matter the size just doesn't make sense. I'm still shocked that he wouldn't budge on the quote.
Does this make sense to anyone else? Charging for 8 square feet of glass for 3 square feet of product?

You can get 1/4 at many local hardware store cut to size for about $3.50 per foot. Usually cut while you wait. My local (Gordon hardware) store cuts for me if I dont have enough of my own to cut. I dont see why you would really want/need anything special.

You could use 1/8", (and I have) for smaller horizontal overflows, but I would recommend 1/4.

Its actually pretty simple to cut if you have large enough peices to work with, and arent tryingto take a 1/2 inch off of a 2' peice.

i got my glass baffles cut to size at tayhoe glass in oak park. 1blk from the green line stop at ridgeland. 4 pieces each 10.5" x 11.75" for about $30 if I remember correctly.
