Looking for a bit of advice here on Carbon

Looking for a bit of advice here on Carbon. I have been using Kent Marine Carbon on my Reef tank but I am curious to know if using the cheaper brands makes any difference. I know that there might be an issue with phosphates with a cheaper grade but can that be off set with something like Phosguard from Seachem?

I am currently using "black diamond" from, I think, marineland. Works great and is fairly cheap.

My next GAC order will be from www.bulkreefsupply.com ---- their carbon has a very good track record around here.

As for phosphates, you can check that very easily. Set up your phosphate test kit tube with only tank water. Soak 10-15 granules of GAC in it for a few minutes. Then pour this into a fresh test tube (minus the granules) and do a normal phosphate test. If the carbon has phosphate, this should detect it for you.

I like the Kent reef carbon's pelletized shape for ease of use. I think you'll hear from the carbon experts here, however, that it is a generally poor grade of carbon rated for vapor absorbtion and may be less effective than some others. So it is probably not worth a premium price.I no longer use it.
Rox 8 is the best carbon but very pricey. Lignite type carbon is very good and used in a number of commercial brands. I get mine in bulk from Bulk Reeef Supply..I don't know which ones but you can research any you have in mind. Sea Chem's matrix gets great reviews and is a nice easy to use spherical shape but it is very pricey.
A search under granulated activated carbon on this forum will get you quite a bit of information.

Anyone tried ProLineâ"žÂ¢ Techno Carbon?

It claims to absorb ammonia nitrites and nitrates as well! Sounds impressive.
