Lutz Tank Has Been Removed

Hello everyone.

It is with great dismay that we need to report that the Lutz Tank has been removed from the museum. Chris received a phone call about a week and a half ago that it either needed better maintenance or needed to be removed. The BOD voted to remove the tank.

The tank has been an object of discussion (usually heated discussions) for many years now. Because CTARS has never been able to maintain the tank on at least a weekly basis or install a tank that is pretty much maintenance free, the tank has, for the most part, been an embarrassment to the CTARS name.

As everyone is aware, Ron has been maintaining the tank since 2013 pretty much on his own. He used his own money for equipment and salt for some time and got to the tank when he could. However, only one person with two jobs, a child and planning a wedding can only do so much. When removing the tank came up, Ron was very disheartened to hear that we felt it best to take it out.

Last night after the meeting, the tank was removed. The Board thanks Emery & Jas and his son for staying late with Chris and I while we took on this project in the dark. Every piece of equipment and livestock was documented as the removal took place.

Originally the Lutz was going to place another donated animal in the location of the tank and we were going to auction the tank and equipment in the coming weeks. However, Kate personally came in to see Chris yesterday before the meeting after speaking with him for some time over the phone. They would still like the tank there but, a better setup with a tank that is more self maintained is needed/wanted.

We plan to attempt the re-install of the tank by the end of November. A number of donations will be needed in order to make this project work this time.

Right now, a new stand and hood is being made and the current equipment will be cleaned up and assessed if it can still be used. (for example: the skimmer in the tank was not working and when removed we found it was severely cracked)

Please contact Chris by telephone or email if you would like to help or would like to donate.

On a final note...please keep this thread clean of any really strong personal opinions/criticisms. We would like it to stay up and open :) Again, emails and phone calls work best in this type of situation and we are all here to hear you out.

Thank you Ron for the time and money you have spent on this. I maintain a tank at a preschool (time and money out of my pocket), so I know how hard this can be.

Will the "new" set up still be a reef tank?

Thanks,

Keith

Has there been any thought to setting up an AIO tank such as a RS max, bio cube, or IM nuvo? Might be easier to maintain for the people of the Lutz in between service from Ron or any one else.

On a separate note, if your still going to use the same tank, I still have that 4 bulb T5 Chris was interested in. It does need a ballast but its free.

I like the Idea of a RS Max or Biocube. I think it would be better to have an enclosed tank rather than rimless like the IM tanks. But an AIO does sound easier, Good Idea Salty!!

I just want to throw it out there that AIOs can also be difficult to maintain. There is no room for error on the ATO system, most AIO with an enclosed T5 hood heat up the water to dangerous levels, difficult to maintain low nutrients since there are no good nano skimmers on the market........

I thought the RS Max's came with a skimmer attached to the filter section of the tank? As far as the heat, is the Lutz air-conditioned?

Ok thats all well and good but who would by the rsm????

If I win the one from CMAC, I will donate it to the Lutz...... How is the club doing on the books?? I'm sure we could work out a deal with Red Sea for a RSM on the cheap.....

Im all for a club tank but i would hate to see the same thing happen again. Ron put his own time and money into something that was not his responsibility but the clubs. Th club should have a set annual budget for livestock, mantinence, and thing that may happen. A piggy bank incase of power failure or what not. Just as it is our tank we also have the obligation to provide something nice to look at for the Lutz. this should be planned out as a annual expense and not something just done on a shoestring. Mantinence and any cleaning, feedings, should all be planned out well ahead of time and readily available to all of those who volunteer to help. And we should keep documentation of changes made in case a changing of the guard happens or illness. If we decide to do this it needs to be a 110% commitment.

Agreed.

You are welcome to use are school reef as an example we never have any real issues . I check it weekly and it gets a monthly water change ... No sps because we do not dose...
