macroalgae

I was talking to a friend about tanks and I'm sure he got tired of me answering his questions with, "Because 'they' say to". Here's the biggest one that stumped me. Why do you put macroalgae in the sump? And if someone says that it doesn't look good in the main tank, let me rephrase that. Why do you use it at all?

Most people use microalgea for two reasons. Nutrient exportation, and breeding pods.

Algea will suck up a lot of excess waste in the water, making it another way to filter your tank.

Also, pods love living in microalgea, it helps breed them.

Other people use it because it can become a nuisance in the maintank, getting out of control, and for people that don't use the specific species Chaetomorpha algea, it can turn asexual, and release all of it's contents into your tank, something you don't want. Hence, some people light their sumps/refugium 24/7 to stop this from occuring.

Hope this helps.

I second the nutrient export. It's great for reducing nitrates.

It can serve a dual purpose for algae eating fish-- some tangs have been known to munch on your macro when you thin it out. You have to thin it out in order to keep it growing-- keeping it growing is what keeps the nitrate or other nutrients down.

Nutrient export such as nitrates was the answer I was afraid of getting. If this is a reason to have the macro, why have so much live rock in the tank or a deep sand bed?
