Mag 9.5 and Mag 7 ( has this happened to you )

I have a mag 9.5 for the return and a cl mag 7 .. they sound kinda loud to me . not from air being inthe pump . just from the pump running itself . is this normal ??? thanks for your advice.

Yes, they are loud. I've had both and the Mag7 was actually much worse than the Mag9.5. I now run Eheim which is night and day quieter.
BTW, a Mag 9.5 is a HUGE return pump for a 30G tank! The SCWD will also kill the flow of the Mag7.

I have an eheim 1262 for my closed loop and an eheim 1260 for my return and together they are quieter than my QO 3000 was.

My MAG7 got louder all of a sudden.

So I took it apart and figured out that the rubber nubs that hold the shaft in place were worn and the shaft was spinning....making the pump much louder.

So what I did was wrap the nubs in teflon tape....enough so that when I put it back in the shaft is held tight.

You should check this.....

I am running a MAG 7 for my skimmer and its not loud. I have a MAG 9 for my return and this one is a bit loud. I have quited it down a bit by using the bottom bracket of a "RIO" pump with the suction cup on the corners. I then got a zip tie and tied them together and viola noise is gone. I know most people here have some "RIO" pumps and parts in their closets.

yeah thats the reason I didnt get a mag bacause of noise, my eheim 1262 is quieter than my computer fan

count me in on the eheim wagon... i just got a 1262, it is hands down a GREAT pump and see why Deltec, H&S and some others are using them even though they add a great deal of the expense for the skimmer.

with that being said, you may want to reverse your pumps, put the 9.5 on the cls and 7 on the return to evaluate.
You could help quiet the mags down by putting pad between them and whatever hard surfaces they're attached to.

If you decide to get the eheim you'll be converted.

Mags seem to be hit and miss with noise. Some people seem to get really noisy ones, some dont. It seems there have been a lot of complaints about Mag7's of late. Mine was intolerably loud. BTW, this was a brand new pump.

This happened to me yesterday.

I have been running a Mag 7 on a CL w/ SCWD for a year or so. Cleaned the CL out Friday evening. Yesterday I heard the pump start grinding, really loud. Louder than normal. Took it apart and the magnet on the impeller had split. Luckly I a had Mag 5 to keep the CL going. Now I have to order a new impeller unit.

Oh I also notice so of the grey silver plastic on the housing had turned brown as if it had really been over heated.
