Mag Drive pumps NOT recommended for external use??

Since when? I need to get a Mag 2 to use as an external return pump for a very tiny drilled nano reef (two gallon). Myself and others have recommended Mag Drives as external pumps for a very long time and many members here use them in that way. Also, when I purchased my Mag 5, I remember the box stating that it could be use submerged or external.

Has this changed?

I have used these pumps externally as well. While these are excellent pumps, we have received numerous feedback from customers commenting on the pumps' noise and leakage problems when used externally. Personally, I have not experienced these pumps. However, that much feedback proves to us that these are not isolated incidents. We put the comment on our website as a service to our customers. Unfortunately, it is also possible somebody to take that negatively. However, we felt it was better to be safe than sorry. I have no problem with that at all. I just wanted to be sure before I bought one.

I still am going to have to get one since there are no other types of pumps that small that can be used externally. I'll just cross my fingers.

The main thing to look out for is the possibility for leak. You just need to keep a close eye on it. People have told me that the leaking just starts one day out of the blue, but that it does start slowly. I have heard of customers applying silicone to the pump. Apparently, it is a good solution as silicone is not difficult to peel off when it comes time to clean the pump out. Take it with a grain of salt, as I have not tried it yet.

I have been using Mag Drive pumps for a long time in believe it or not computer Processor cooling. I have not had good experience with the Mag Drive pumps when used inline. They work great for a submerged setup but I would never use one again for inline. The PC that I'm typing this on is watercooled and I'm using a Mag Drive pump with it, I have had it in there for about 2 + years with no problems. The problems I have seen are around the intake. They will crack very easy if you tighten the fitting down a little to tight, also they tend to leak around the 4 intake screws.

Never had a problem with the Mag pumps leaking that I have used ( mag 5 and 7 ) but I had problems with both of them starting after power is disconnected. I even took them back but the problems remained. A friend of mine also experienced these problems with the mag drive pumps. I live in Western Washington and power outages can be frequent so maybe just an isolated incedent as I hear rave reviews of the Mag Drive pumps all the time.

I agree, my mag 2 leaked but that was because I screwed the intake plate down too tight for the plastic (I didn't think that I screwed it tight at all, but it just snapped the plastic tip off). The reason why I had it open in the first place was because the pump had stopped after a power failure and would not restart. I now know that applying a slight tap to the pump with a large mass object (like a hammer or heavy piece of metal) will cause just enough knockage to loosen the impellor and it will start again. No need to open the pump.

I just bought a new Mag 2 and this pump looks slightly different than my old one, so maybe they made improvements.
