Mag Flake??

hello
Would anyone know were i could buy mag flake made by dead Sea works ltd near Manchester,CT.I would like to use it for a magnesium supplement,I know i can buy from bulk reef supply,but really like to buy 50lbs or so.Any input would help

Swannyson7 thank you for responding to my post .I'm going to try to get over there this weekend and see if i can locate a bag.Do you know of any other reefers using other types of de-icers as magnesium supplements?

i use mag flake also. get 2 bags bc i only see it in winter. i get mine at an ACE hardware.

are you using it in some sort of reactor? Or are you using it to mix with water to add as a "dose" if the latter Epsom salts is MUCH cheaper and it is just Mag.... DIY Supplement...

BTW. there are TWO types of driveway/ice melt. Calcium based (which I use for Ca supplement) and Mag based, I would not use mag based in the tank as a supp as it contains few things you really don't want in your water

I though that you had to mix both magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate to make a balanced stock of solution, in order to dose to maintain levels of mag ??

That is correct, magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate are usually mixed for use as a Mg supplement.

hmmmm, good to know, I guess I only have HALF of the formula.... might be why my Mag is tough to keep at 1300

stopped at Agway and Ace today no mag flake there oh well try some other stores.Has anyone used safe step deicer for magnesium chloride .Company states on bag 100% magnesium chloride.
I may pick up a bag and test for phosphate and copper.If not my driveway will be free of ice no great loss LOL

I've Been adding Magflake only for years.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but if I remember correctly, the precipitate from combing the two helps get out the sulfur impurities in the form of calcium sulfate. Meanwhile, chlorine isn't very stable in solution and will escape in gas form (this is why a bucket of bleach doesn't smell like chlorine when left for a couple days).

swannyson7 i will try some of the safe step magnessium,I will let you know if it works out.Try it in a small batch if things go bad i will keep saltwater on hand for water change.
