Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate

I found some magnesium chloride at Home Depot and was wondering if it was all the same? it is not "mag flake". The name on the bag said "freez gard" mag chloride ice melter crystals and on the back I looked and the active ing. said MgCL2-6H2O
(Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate)

Which is 98-100% Magnesium Chloride right.

As long as it is just Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate it should be safe. right??

Since it hasn't been tested, there's no way to know whether it's suitable. Testing is very expensive, unfortunately.

The names may change, but the opinion will be the same. :D

No brands other than MAG flake have any detailed impurity profile available, nor am I aware of any hobbyist testing of other brands. Ammonia is a substantial concern in magnesium chloride.

The concern HD is the other ~ 2 % And 2 % means 20,000 ppm / kg of unknowns.

So how is the weather being that I'm visiting in Texas :)

there are a few guys here in Michigan that has been using the freeze guard for some time now..one that I know is on his 4th bag of it and has not had any bad effects from it so far..i don't know if that is a success or not but 4 #50 bags is alot to go through i think..i talked to him and he said all his corals are fine and his ammonia has not changed..i have a bag of it but have not used it still been worried about it but i have been thinking about giving it a try..and dose very little at a time

I live NW (in Thief River Falls) of HD and the day you wrote that, 1/30, I believe it was like -40F or something crazy like that.

I have been using it for a year or two. I let all the sediment settle for a couple days and then syphon it into another container with an airline hose. I'll probably toss it all when I find a better replacement.
