magnesium chloride

MagFlake is about 46-48% MgCl2.

This product is about 98-100% MgCl2 so it is twice as concentrated.

No information regarding the contaminate levels or the chemical purtiy grade are available in the MSDS sheets.

thanks for the fast reply. If I were to use this as a 2 part where can I get the receipe? I have been using mag flake, but I don't want to order it. I found a place near where I live that carries magnesium chloride.

If you want to use a product like the one posted above which is twice as potent as the MagFlake, then you would only want to use 1/2 the amount that Randy specifies for MagFlake.

the recipe is 5 tbsp magnesium chloride + 3 tbsp magnesium sulfate per cup of water.
or 5 cups magnesium chloride + 3 cups magnesium sulfate per 1 gallon of water. That is the same ratio to make one cup, I only make one cup at a time. It helps to warm up the water in the microwave to completely dissolve the magnesium sulfate (epsom salt).

what's the price for the magnesium chloride? I'm interested in getting some if its cheap.

I can get a 50lb bag of magnesium chloride for $82.00+ tax. Here is the website of where I am getting it from http://sierrachemicalcompany.com/. This place is located in Sacramento (where I live). They also sell by the pound but it $6.75 per lb. If you buy the 50lb bag its way cheaper.

thanks.
a 30 pound bucket from BRS costs $110 total. so $82+tax for 50 lbs is not bad, about half the price of BRS. you can pretty much get anything BRS sells for about half if you find the right source.

someone can do a group buy and repackage in one of those priority mail flat rate if it fits it ships boxes and still be cheaper than BRS. I figure a medium box can take 12-13 lbs. if 50lbs is too much for you, I can buy a medium box from you :)

This product is about 98-100% MgCl2, I don't know how much BRS is? I bought a 5lb bag yesterday just to test it out. I will keep you in mind when I decide to buy a 50lb bag. This product is TECH grade. The lady at the front desk told me that reefers buy it all the time, which made me feel little more comfortable buying it.

Tech grade is equivalent to buying De-icers as best as I can tell. The contaminate levels are questionable as opposed to what BRS sells which is food grade (pharmaceutical grade). ;)

Chemistry Grade Alternative Name for Grade Purity Uses
-------------------------------------------------------------

Reagent (ACS): Highest purity available; meets or exceeds standards set by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Works for all scientific and manufacturing needs
Often required for experiments involving living biological matter

Laboratory (Lab): Relatively high purity, but may contain small amounts of impurities Sufficiently pure for most science fair projects
Not suitable for use in food or medicine of any kind

Technical (Industrial): Contains impurities Used for commercial or industrial purposes. Can still be used for many science fair projects
Not suitable for use in food or medicine of any kind

One of the biggest concerns with bulk magnesium chloride is ammonia. Be sure to either measure it for ammonia or start dosing very slowly and use small amounts at once when using an unknown brand. :)
