Making Salt Water

I have just purchase a RO/DI system and would like to start making salt water. How difficult is it to make salt water in small batches? I do not have a huge tank and would like to make salt water in 5 gal batches. I hear some people talking about putting water in a garbage can with a heater & power head. I really don't want to store that much water. What would be a good salt to purchase? Can I just mix the salt with RO/DI water and then add to the tank or do I have to "age" the water or run tests on it? Thanks.
 
You don't need to age the water if it's RO/DI, but you still want to mix the salt a day or two in advance to make sure you get the salinity right. Also, you do need to bring the water up to the tank temperature, so you will need at least a heater.
 
I do 5 gallon water changes. So, I get a 5 gallon bucket, put 2 1/2 cups of salt, mix, then throw in a powerhead. The next day I check the salanity, add more salt if needed, remove water and replace w/ R/O if needed.
 
note...if it's under 10% of your tank volume - you do not need to bring up the temperture - room temperture is ok.
 
Room temp may be fine (depending on the room) but the water coming out of the tap may be considerably colder. Right now, my tap is about 45. I definitey wouldn't want to add more than a few cups of that in my tank, and I've got 150gals!

If you've got time, let it get to room temp and, as said, you can use that for smaller changes. Faster, and better, would be a heater. I use a 100w in a 5 gal bucket, and it heats the water from about 50 to 80 in around 3 hours, and that's in a 55 degree basement.
 
My understanding is that freshly made saltwater is more caustic than aged regardless of whether u use ro/di or not.

If you mix your water overnight it will reach room temperature.
