Mangrove Plants

Anyone had experience with mangrove's in the sump or fuge?
I just bid on and won 5 growing plants on E-Bay for $1.99
I have researched on the web on planting and care of them, and was just wondering if anyone here have any and your take on using them. Thanks

Norman

I've used them before in the tank. I mounted them in small rocks (drilled holes for the pods to fit inside and for roots). They grow too tall for most people, unless you have a nice sized room where they can put on a few feet and not hit the light. I'd light with at least medium light. I'd like to get a few if you have extra around frag swap time...

I will give that a try, mounting root system in rocks, and I don't have a problem with how tall they get, but if all 5 of them survive the transplant to my fuge, then I'm sure a trade could be made as 5 seems like a lot for a 10 gal fuge:rolleyes:

I had them for a few years a while back. I never really got them to grow well. They would grow sprouts then the sprouts would die off a few months later. It was almost a futile process until I decided to get rid of them. I heard that the reason I had this problem was that you were suppose to spray them with RO every day, which I failed to do.

Hmmm. another daily chore, what have I done now! That mouse click gets me every time on E-Bay. gotta quit bidding even if it is cheap:D

I've had them for awhile, a little over 2 years an they are rather slow growing. I spray them daily with RO water. They seem to grow best with natural light, as I've seen a considerable slow down in growth since I've changed my tank set up.

Guess I'll be getting a spray bottle now, and hope they do good with a Aquarium plant growth bulb for Home Depot as I have that isntalled already. Natural light not an option due to location of fuge. But then, a slow growing plant would be a good thing for my 10 gal.
Thanks for the info

Norman

I used a plant grow bulb at first, and then switched over to a compact fluorescent light bulb. I got about the same amount of growth with each.

Are these pods, or are they rooted already (assuming just pods)? If their just pods, give them a little time after putting them in water for the roots to appear. I had some that rooted within a couple of weeks and some that took a bit longer.

I had mine in the tank under 175W MH at the time. I kept only the top out of the water and kept moving it down as it grew until it was on the bottom and touching the MH bulbs...

According to the discription and picture, they will arrive with at least 1 inch of root and several leaves already. So guess I'll get a rock and drill some holes to put them in and set up some type of holder to set in the fuge and allow water to flow through, and stick with the plant bulb for now. Thanks so much for all the help

Did they come in yet, Norman?

Brandon

Not yet Brandon, they shipped today and should be here Friday. I'm getting a rock from Eric at the Jungle for them to root in. BTW, your welcome to trave to the meeting Saturday with me if want to save a little gas. PM me if you would like to go together.

My mangrove plants came in today, and I now have 5 plants average length of 14inches, plus 2-3 inches of roots and several leaves. If anyone would like one of these, just let me know and I can bring it to the meeting tomorrow. I have 3 to let go, but they are pretty good size

If you are bringing them to the meeting I'll take a couple.
Tim

I will bring them to the meeting, and you can have 2 of them, that still leaves one.

Norman

Could someone pick one up for me and bring it to the swap? Once I get the room finished, it'll be a prime spot for a mangrove:). If not, no biggie.
