So my gf named our mantis Manny........... I'm pretty sure she's a female, but I could be wrong. This thread is for the pics of Manny and then some.

These pics were taken late last night in the dark, I had to adjust my digicam accordingly. Better pics to follow.

Here are some better pics. Roy, can you please identify this species for me? Thanks. The coloration of this mantis seems to change from dark red to this shade of green. Interesting animal.

I'm having some quick second decisions to split the tank 50/50. One side for Manny and the other side for a cephalopod (cuttlefish) on the other side. 2 interesting predators with very unique features.

I thought yellow were females and blue were males? Oh well doesn't matter now......... The cuttle is gonna go in........ not in the same space of course......... or would it? :D

You are thinking of Gonodactylaceus ternatensis. G. chiragra are not that easy to sex by color although the dark green body and bright red uropods are typical of males.

Some species of cuttlefish feed heavily on stomatopods.

Roy - I'm going to use a separate divider in the tank so one goes to Manny and the other goes to the cuttle.

BTW, I caught some fresh live crabs and Manny finally went for it. Beat the crap out of them.

that is awesome what manny did to the crab. Mine is a big wuss and will not hardly eat anything live. How big is manny?

Manny is a smasher and around ~5in long. Body isn't too large, but he is that long. He snaps at the crab a few times, then drags it into the cave, snaps it some more and the next day out in the open sand are the remains.

Oh btw I caught some nice *** hermits today. I gotta get some pics of those.

An unfortunate and tragic death happened to Manny as he was molting and a larger crab got to him :(

But here is a pic of my new peacock, named Vegas, for obvious reasons:

Getting acclimated to the new environment with plenty of play space:

The smallest crab in the tank, yet one of the longest survivors :D

More pics to come later.........

BTW, can anyone sex this mantis?

Hey what's up triggerk, I got him at the crappy Aquarium Concepts in Hayward. They were asking a lofty $40 for it. I told them that was a ridiculous mark up for it's size and offered them $30, the salesperson talked to the manager and said okay so I took him/her home. My last mantis, Manny, was only $10 from a hook up at Tropical Paradise from the owner.

This new peacock, Vegas, is pretty colorful and seems to be doing just fine.

Have a question: Can the mantis survive with a puffer in equal size in the same tank?
