I will be going to Marco island in FL this july and I was wondering if there are any good places to collect mantis around there?

... its illegal. A very healthy fine for that stuff. I grew up in Florida, and you just cant do that any more. You cant take so much as an empty shell from any reef site. There is no place i know of on the inland waterways that you could snorkel/dive around and collect mantis. Much less on the more visited dive sites.

I had a question on that to! Is there a permit you can get or is any place you can collect. I do not want to start a business i would just like the experience of finding something for my reef.

actually it is not illegal to collect fish and critters for your tanks. There is a list of the things that can be collected without a collectors (resale) permit (which is pricey) you will however need a recreational saltwater fishing license (not so pricey).

HERE is the list of tropicals that can be collected recreationally.

HERE are the ammendments and addendums to collecting in Florida.

Under no circumstances should you EVER take a piece of LR. Even a tiny <1" chunk can get you in a heap of trouble. You are however allowed to harvest a gorgonian with a piece of LR attached to it that is under 1".

I didn't see stomatopods on the list nor did I find any stomatopod info by searching the site. You can probably call them and get more info with regard to stomatopods. Here's the contact info:

Great post kara. I thought the live rock ban included other things. And to think all the stuff i could have been getting.........lol

hehe.. oh well! There is always time for visits and collecting! I get the most beautiful shells while diving.

I get my hermits and other inverts on dives. I always see arrow crabs, condy anemones and LOTS of fish that can be found for sale at LFS. I don't collect fish because of 2 reasons:

1) Parasites and disease. I don't have a quarantine tank.

2) Death. It's hard to collect fish and have them live. First you have to deal with slowly bringing them to the surface because of the difference in atmosphere pressure. Then you should always keep each fish/critter in it's own container because they can damage each other. Then you have to make sure you have a good quantity of sea water for them so they don't get ammonia burn. If I ever collected a fish out of the ocean and it died, I would feel REALLY guilty.. really really guilty. So I stick with things that don't ever seem to die.

:D
