Mantis needs a home (Chicago Area)

Friends,

I had the wonderful opportunity to find a mantis hitch-hiker on my TBS rock. Unfortunately, I don't have the setup at the moment to give him a proper home, and I don't want to kill him. He's a beauty...2 inches long, yellow and brown stripe patterning on the carapice, blue arms (It's 6:45am and I'm on my way to the airport and can't think of the proper term :D), I think I saw blue spots around the head.

I'd like to give the opportunity to anyone in the Chicago area to come pick him up and give Tamper (His name) a good home. I will not be around this weekend but I've made arrangements with criccio, who's babysitting my tank this weekend, to let someone in to pick him up.

Give criccio a PM or email if you're interested and let him know I sent you about the mantis. Trades or cash won't be refused but not asked for either. I just want to see Tamper get a good home.

Cheers!

silent,

We'll see. My only concern about shipping Tamper is the survivability of shipping as I have never shipped live animals before. If I can't find a local person who wants him, I'll drop you a PM.

Cheers!

i PMed you dont know if i was first or not but i still want him... the box said full when i tryed to reply

Hello all...

I didn't forget any of you, and knew what I was doing. I wanted to offer it to someone local first for pick-up before trying to deal with shipping it to someone.

As it turns out, it's all a moot point. I came home tonight to find Tamper dead. I don't know what killed him, but somehow he was killed. I apologize for any confusion about who had 'dibs'.

I have the second half of my TBS package coming in two weeks or so and there will probably be another mantis or two in there. I have promised Hackster the first one in there, but any others will be available for pick-up from locals as first priority.

I don't know why my PM box is full...I just cleaned it out last week...*sighs* Oh well...off to do housecleaning.

Cheers!

Tamper was a cool name.

I have a mantis, his name is gollum.

Thanks! :) It was a spur of the moment naming, but more than appropriate since he was from Tampa Bay. :)

I have a couple of theories about what killed Tamper this past weekend. One was that the water over-heated (I had a 50W ebo-jager heater set at 80 in there). But the hole in that theory is that there's a small gorilla crab in there too in holding and he seems to be doing just fine. The other theory is he got a little too close to the powerhead. Didn't get sucked into it, but perhaps stuck up against the strainer. The last theory is that I had TOO much circulation in there. I had about 3 or 4 gallons of water in a bucket with a Maxi-head 600 PH that moves about 100gph or so. Can't help but wonder if Tamper just became exausted in the current and gave up.

Any ideas anyone how I killed Tamper so I learn from it and don't make the same mistake?

Cheers!

P.S. I like Gollum...Might have to name one that...:)

Did you use tankwater when you put him in the bucket? I know inverts are very sensitive to changes in salinity and water conditions.

It could be the bucket has some residual metals/chemicals that didn't agree with him.

The reason I named mine gollum: he likes fish, he's constantly rubbing his hands, his eyes stick out, he's always lurking in the shadows. Just seemed appropriate.

Yes, tank water was used, though I'm confused as to why it would kill the mantis but not the gorilla in the same tub.

It was a brand new tub, food-grade plastic, so I'm pretty sure residual chemicals wasn't the problem.

I also don't know if it was the tank water that did it. I'll grant you that I didn't check the salinity of the seawater that all the rock and critters came in, but I haven't lost any sponges or anything that are MUCH more sensitive to changes in salinity and water conditions.

I'll also grant that there wasn't a water change in those three days that I was gone, but he made it at least two of those days as criccio had told me that Tamper liked to hide behind the powerhead and to be careful when I stick my fingers in there.

*sighs* Well, if nothing else, it's a learning experience. I'm going to go out this weekend and pick up a 5 gallon bow to use as a mantis habitat for the next one that comes in the next shipment.

Cheers!
