I want to do a trial run at this meeting of one of the IMAC DVDs that we have in the library. The DVD is entitled:
Microscope Safari Through Desert Reef and is Presented by Sandra Shoup. Her description of the DVD is given below. Should everything work out, we will be showing more of the DVDs over the coming year. Once the DVD has been seen at a metting we will allow it to be borrowed from the library.

Corporate controller by day and frustrated scientist by nightââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ I am but a lowly reef aquarist who got involved in this fascinating hobby in March of 1999. My 30-gallon acrylic ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œhook tankââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ (as my husband describes my first aquarium) lasted eight months before being upgraded to a 90-gallon glass tank. Eighteen months later the 90 turned into a 220-gallon custom tank with a 30-gallon refugium sitting on custom cabinetry (built by my husband) and sitting where my formal dining table used to be.
Since that time I have amassed quite a library and have spent more time reading that reefing! I've taken Eric Borneman's Coral Biology class, Dr. Ron Shimek's Invertebrate Zoology and Sand Bed Ecology classes online through Reef Central. I've attended all the MACNA conferences since 1999 and the IMAC conference for the first time last year. I was the editor for MASNA's newsletter for a year and have written numerous articles for Reefkeeping.com. In all, my husband says I've been a model ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œpointed-headed reef geekââ"šÂ¬Ã‚Â.
I've found that I have a special interest in invertebrate zoology, specifically microscopic invertebrates. This, of course, means that in addition to taking over the formal dining room for my aquarium, I set up a mini-laboratory in my husband's exercise room. With my dissecting scope and an Olympus trinocular microscope I picked up from a veterinary pathologist back East, I've spent hours studying and photographing microscopic invertebrates that I've found in my tank, sump and refugium.
So I'd like to welcome you to join me for a look at the beautiful and fascinating world of microscopic reef tank animals. Using photomicrographs and video clips we'll be examining animals that can be found in the most unlikely places, such as the crud at the bottom of my sump! While this program probably won't make the next issue of The Journal of Invertebrate Biology, it's ideal for the aquarist seeking justification for not vacuuming their sump every month.
