Marine grade varnish?

I see a lot of mention of a "marine grade varnish" used to finish off a stand and protect it from saltwater. Is this the actual name of it? Where can I find it? Does it really protect the wood from saltwater indefinitely? Does it go on last?

there is a finish you can get at your local home depot its called:
helsmans spar urathane

Good to know, I'm working on a wooden hood and I'll need something to waterproof it.

And for the interior of the canopy and stand, "melamine" seems to be THE thing to use?
