alright, i've seen two different type of maxi-jet modifications and i want to do one to all my maxi-jets. was wondering which type people perfered. there's the hack saw method where the outake is cut off and holes and drilled on the bottom and there's the "tunze" one which takes off the whole bottom and puts in a hobby boat propeller. was curious to which one people preferred because i'll finally have time to do it in two days :)

From the flowrate alone I'd say the Stream mod is much better.

But better yet since you have some time to burn :) Why don't you try both and compare?

D.

I'd say the Stream flows more, but the hack-saw method will give you two different directional currents if put on a wave timer.

haha, don't have that much time to try both... by time i mean like a few hours... lol... yeah, they will be on a wavemaker...

i would do the hacksaw for the wavemaker..... then it is like you have 2 power heads in one. but for a constant flow, the stream mod is definatly better.

I have a cut-off mod and a maxi-stream mod on wavemaker - I'd go for both. The cut-off mod only takes a minute, but the maxi-stream will take time to get the parts (I had to order the props and carbon fiber rod) and take a while for glue to dry once you assemble it. There are two things I don't like about the maxi-stream mod. One is that there is some hum from it probably due to the props not being perfectly balanced - but this may be a case-by-case basis, some people have reported no increase in noise. The other is that I need to keep it mounted lower in the tank than I'd like due to it being so powerful that it occaisionally makes an air vortex from the surface causing a huge slurping noise and then making a cloud of micro-bubbles.

I was thinking the same thing today. Which mod to do? I have a rio 1100 in my tank right now that i want to replace with a moded maxi jet. Which Maxi jet should I be looking to mod...a MJ 400, MJ 600 or a MJ 900?

I much prefer the stream mod. I have both and the difference is huge in the amount of flow the stream mod does compared to the hacksaw method

Did both, settled with 2 stream mods (high in tank) and 2 "hack" mods (low in tank) in my 120. Hack mod was good for low (near sand bed) as it did not stir the sand, as the stream mod did when I located it near the sand. I did the D's dual nitro mod (thanks again to everyone who contributed to it) and it puts out some serious flow with the only downside being the noise - but not enough to hear over the TV...if you are looking for random wide streamed high flow - do the stream mod

ijustsent two MJ900 impellars to dhnguyen earlier today for him to mod and i cannot wait to get them back...

I know what the hacksaw mod is, but was lookin for more info on it. Is there a thread hding somewhere with pics, etc on this?

One cut. You cut off the nozzle. The further back you cut it, the larger the output angle difference will be. eg. If you cut back deep, the angle might be 90 degrees apart, if you cut less off, you might get 45 deg. appart.

I made the mistake of cutting one too far back and the flow was either way left or way right.

I guess I am missing the basics of this mod, I look at that pic, & what you are telling me makes no sense. heh
