Maxima being pestered?

I have been lurking-learning here for several months preparing to add a clam to my tank. You all are a wealth of information! Thanks!! So I just added a 4" Maxima to my tank (my first). My Chevron Tank has the bad habit of picking up substrate (crushed coral) & spitting it out all over the tank. A few pieces of substrate have fallen into the mantle of the clam & can be seen from above. The clam is not opening fully & not extending the mantle. Do I need to be concerned or do anything about this? Will the clam expel the debris on its own? I don't want to disturb the clam & add to the stress of aclimating to a new home. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

the clam can get ride of the substrate on its own. but u will need to move him up into the rock work and this might lessen the chances of him getting pelted with rocks by ur tang

I agree with mbbuna. I had 2 gobies that would dump substrate into mine. It would expel the stuff but was a pain to put it thru. I got rid of my gobies and now no probs. If you move it up maybe the tang will leave it alone.

Thanks guys. I placed a flat rock under the substrate before placing the clam. I planned to move it up higher in the tank after it attaches to the rock so that should help like you said. How long does it usually take a 4" Maxima to attach? It's foot was very small when I picked it up. I don't want to disturb (stress) it until I have a good chance of it being attached to the rock. Thanks again!
