May 2007 TOTM Revisited

Sorry to hear about the housing market Dave, but I am glad to see the tank looking so nice ;)

Yes - it will be a fine mancave :) 54" or 58" plasma and a 7 speaker surround system to come...thinking retinal scan entry only :D

Man It's hard to get your feedback

Wasn't the market in fact, received 2 offers in one week. The only house I was interested in, well he gutter the basement and all the flooring upstairs and wanted the same as he accepted from me before...........less the $15G+ it was going to cost him to repalce the materials. Oh well - staying put for at least another year now.

Wow, stunning tank! Where in Toronto are you? I'd love to get one of everything - I'm sure seeing the tank is to be like a kid in a candy store :D

Amazing tank Dave. I am also growing SPS in a 220 gallon tank but am having problems with my MTC Procal reactor. The flow rate is never consistent (always drops over 24 hours). I was wondering about your setup. What feed pump and media do you use, and what flow rate/bubble count are you using? I use a mag2 pump with ARM coarse media, 70 ml/min and 1 bubble/sec.

Thanks

Thanks. Actually, need to make 2 or three changes because of growth patterns......and because my husbandry has been none existent the last 3 months due to having the house up for sale.

Amazing!!!
Great dedication, great touch for coral placement and great husbandry.

Located in Oakville, about 5 minutes from ORG if you have ever been to that LFS.

Thinking a Denon 4200 series integrated amp with a 54" plasma screen. Undecided about whether to go with Paradigm or Tanoy speakers........velydyne sub.

so, now you need to post your home theater project!

Thanks. If the flow rate fluctuates, well that can depend on the pump. I have an Iwaki feed pump on my Procal. I use about 2 bubbles second and maybe 50ml/min (don't recall the exact reading). Consider cleaning the intake tubing to your pump, sometimes it collects "junk" which can restrict flow. Sometime I use aircraft wire to clean mine out....maybe 1-2x's year. Dave

x2 on the retinal scan, although at first i misread it as rectal scan :eek1:

always inspiring stuff dave. can't believe you're not roped into dosing this and that to achieve incredible results!

That sounds like fun!
Glad to hear you are bypassing Bose. those two brands have good things going for them. Though, for speakers, make sure to check out Klipsch's stuff.. I have been very very very impressed..... and that comes from a sound engineer. The B3 bookshelf speakers would make a great core of a system

Also, Meyer sound (is aimed at pro audio) but has some speakers that would do very well in the home, but are $$$$$.....
Mythbusters goes to Meyer sound when they have sound myths :)
If you have the change, I believe it is near impossible to find a cleaner better sounding speaker.

I also like what infinity has put out too.

retinal.......definitely retinal :D

Have honestly never vacuumed the gravel. Lots of flow keeps things from settling. When I get some green film algae on the gravel it means it is time to change the RO filters, the it goes away in about 3 days.

Your tank is amazing!!

How do you keep your sandbed so clean? Do you gravel vac. it often?

Thanks Tim. Honestly, I could not commit the time to dose anything, my schedule sometimes has me not even looking at the tank for days or even weeks these days. The tank was photographed after about 2.5 months of cleaning the glass once a week, no testing of parameters, and of course no water changes. That being said, tested this week and everything was where it should be.

No highs no lows must be Bose... Klipsch is a speaker company I have not considered yet as the couple stored I have been to do not carry them...there are many great companies to chose from, but ya not a fan of Bose myself. Infinity is a company I am not as familiar with.

So theatre/audio guys - what is the line on audio/video deals these days? I should be able to take at least 20% off the sticker right?

amazingly, a mass chain like best buy carries the Klipsch B3. SOme models come in floorstanding ones with sub... honestly, you don't need those if you get a great sub. Find someone that works there (maybe you can tempt wih frags) and you can take 40-50% off.... monster cable probably 60% off.

one secret of mine...
When I test audio, i use a couple specific pieces of music that push or show flaws in the speakers easily.. The most revealing to the speaker's clarity and power in loud situations is Mahler's 1st symphony- 4th movement up to about 2 minutes in. Specifically the Pierre Boulez recording.. as it is really nicly mastered. http://www.amazon.com/Mahler-Symphony-No-1-Gustav/dp/B00000IIX2 One of the better pieces of music ever writter, "borrowed" by John Williams from time to time... and insane over the top excess- especially in the 4th movement in the entire frequency range.

Good to know, I remember the last time I bought a system I got a pretty good price, but that was in the 90's. So if I look for 20% and the tax (13% here in Ontario) that would be a pretty good deal. I know those cables are really marked up - you can get them for half price from stereo stores.

Am thinking of spending a little more on the front and right speakers through, B3's would make good rear channels though.

All insulated and the fireplace is framed in, buying the drywall today...so I will not have any coral pics to add for a little while until the drywall is up...unless my electrician can not get over to hook up the lights.

Thanks Dave - I am running the feed pump through vinegar today. Do you use coarse media or fine media? Also how do you control your effluent? I just use a small JG ball valve because the needle valve that came with the MTC didnt work too well.

Coincidentally I also live in Oakville about 7 mins from ORG!

I think you should look into Rotel Amps and processors and B&W speakers for your hometheater. Don't worry about your wallet and you can thank me when you blast that first movie :)

I use the coarse media now, but historically the fine media. I spent $75 on my needle valve from ORG, works well but now I run my CO2 and effluent so fast the needle valve is not that important.

Give me another week or two and you will have to come over and see the tank...more pictures will follow, have 90% of the drywall up.

I do like B&W - I bought a pair in the 90's and they still please me today...........wallet is only so deep these days unfortunatly.

Thanks. A 270 is small by today's standards perhaps, but it fits in well with my home.

all i can say is WOW!!!!

Invest in the correct equipment, and of course do a lot of reading, and you can have the exact same results. Check out a few tanks and stock your tank with great frags! Much of it is up to the coral.

If only someday my tank can look as half as good as yours I would be extremely happy. STUNNING is all I can say!
