mentor program

i think thats an awesome idea! I'd love for people to stop by and check out my tank, but more give me ideas on what to make better!

Awesome idea! It can be difficult to convey your setup (e.g. canopy depth, sump size, cabinet real estate, plumbing runs) even with pictures on this message board. As a rookie looking for advice/help from this forum, I always wonder if the people responding have an accurate picture of what I'm trying to describe. Having a mentor (another set of eyes on your configuration) would help when sifting through the responses. Here's a vote for mentoring; my only issue is that I live in Boca Raton.

Well since I opened my mouth I might as well open my house. I don't know everything about everything but pick my brain when ever you need. As I always say my door is always open to all of you. If anyone needs some help or would like to come by and see how I did anything please don't hesitate to give me a call.

I'm always down to help people whenever I come by, and always appreciate comments and/or questions when people come by my place. I just wish I were home more to be able to be more active in our community. Thank goodness we've at least got RC.

Awesome idea!!! As a rookie reefer I always get great advices in this forum... NYVP, I already have your number so I will give you a call soon to pick your brain and get some of that free cheato..I need help setting up a Neptune II also…

I would have to agree this would be a good thing to have. When I started this hobby, I had good help from Armando... then as he got busy with school and stuff.
So I started hanging out with Rogger more, discussing aquarium stuff. I have learn a lot from Armando and a ton from Rogger. They pretty much have been my unofficial mentors...

Without someone who has experience in this hobby to lead you(experience is key, lets face it there are many know it alls that will lead you wrong) , it can be very expensive and bad experience.

In my case both have kept me from spending way more money than I needed to, and saved me from killing some livestock too.

I agree w Red Dawg. I have done my HW to be successful, read up a lot so that I just didnt throw my $$$$ away, but I have been pretty lucky to be able to ask Mel (and a few others) for his assistance and advice in order to do a good job and eliminate some expen$ive mi$takes! Im a collage student so every penny I $pend counts.

I love teaching and learning, right now i;m doing an apprenticeship with the oldest glass tank builder in south FL. With only a handfull of people building glass tanks around here , i felt like it was my duty to learn so that i could teach it to someone else in the future.

You know in Chinese culture, the apprentice has to wash his master's underwear forever before he ever considers teaching him anything, LOL.

I agree that this idea is a very good one. I would suggest that someone create a spread sheet or make a post that is a stickie or something that would serve as a database for those that are offering their services as a mentor. Similar to the LFS spread sheet that is a stickie maybe.

Spread sheet should include things such as experience, expertise, location, contact info, etc.

Maybe contact info is iffy. Someone may not want their info in plain view of everyone. Maybe the holder of the spread sheet has the info and someone requesting a mentor goes through that person and gets matched up to someone that is close?

Remember, you don't have to be in the hobby for 30 yrs to be of help to a newbie.

We could do it by screenname here on RC so we could PM eachother, and put a general idea of where you're located (Boca Raton, plantation, weston, etc) and then it will still be moderately private.

But Coralfragger, that's a great idea. I still want to see your setup someday if/when I'm around springs. I gotta see the Solaris in action :)
