I'm wondering what your growth factor difference would be from using a 14K to a 20K bulb? I've read 14K is an all around good bulb for coloration and growth. The 10K being more for growth little coloration and some people even using 6500K for total growth but almost no coloration. I've been doing alot of reading on the RC forum, which is a good place to start. Just start sifting thru forum messages and pull up MH lighting questions. The searching on the site rarely works, except late at night.

the 14000K bulb is a good in-between for both color and growth. however, if you want less of a balance, like if youwa nt more growth, or if youw ant more color, then you can go either way. When it comes down to it, it is pretty much all preference.
Right now i have a 10000K and 2X65 watt PC actinics on my 40 breeder. The color is very nice. I do have another 10000K bulb as well as a 12000K that i got in the auction from claude during the Jan meeting. i cant wait to try it. But once i put it in, we will see which one i like more.

fishieness-- is it a 250 watt MH mogul? I have a 40 breeder and I am looking hard at getting a 14K bulb only.. How's the heat? Sorry to hijack..

One thing to keep in mind... there is NO standard for color temperature for all manufacturers. One lamp may be a 20k to Geisemann but be a 14k to Phoenix/Aquaconnect. Sure they give you a starting point for what to expect but they aren't a guarantee you'll get the performance/color you are looking for. If it were me I'd look at AB 20k. Ran the DE version for a while and loved it.

I'm running 3-400watt Coralvue's in my 240. I had all 20k's very blue. I just put in one of the coralvue reeflux 10k so far very nice. Much whiter, but still has some other color as well. And the sps seem to love it. And the colors on the corals jump right out. with the 10k reeflux. Bob

Jon is right, there is NO standard for color temperature. And I don't know of any store that can display every bulb so you can see what it looks like. Probably, the best way is to look at someones tank. That is one of the many advantages of doing tank tours.

Hey jjbbambam, did you forget about me? We traded corals for fish, but I ended up with dead fish, while you walked away with healthy coral...

Please pm me!
