Midwest reefer possibly relocating to Sac area

Hello-

I'm looking at a possible job in Sacramento but it would be great to talk to some people from the area to get an insiders opinion of the city. My family and I have always wanted to relocate to northern Ca for several reasons. If anyone has any thoughts to share I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!
Russell

I moved here from Ohio and would never go back. You have to be willing to drive about an hour and a half to get to lots of things, but there are lots of things that you can get to. Homes are really affordable right now, too!

Visit first :) You can probably get a taste of whats to come for the next 10 years within 4-5 hours of driving around town. Visit downtown, old town Sac, and maybe the river or a park. Then stop by a mall and maybe even a reefing store. This will give you some flavor of what you and your family will be around and be seeing. You'll get a better lay of the land, and the traffic and people that come with it.

Then after your done, you may want to run and escape with the family to S.F, Reno or Tahoe like we all do to get out!

Good places to make a safe home are Roseville, Folsom, PARTS of Antelope, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove. Even the good areas arent too far from a bad neighborhood or street as with any city, but for the most part the most easterly, northerly, southern and western outskirts of the metropolitan and outlining cities are generally safer and north to east are the most desirable locations. I've grown up here in Vacaville a small town (110k people) inbetween sac and SF.

I would NEVER live in sacramento or any of it's connecting cities.

to be honest most of sacramento is ugly and dirty , and has a huge homeless population.
i've never felt safe there. theres a few exceptions several of the foothills towns are nice. but for the most part "sacramento" is ghetto

That sounds like my kids definition of ghetto. They really mean not up scale. I've seen some ghettos. Nothing in Sacramento or Placer county is what I would call a ghetto.

Sacramento and neighboring placer county has a full of econimic range, from multi-million dollar homes to low income housing and appartments. You should be able to find something you're comfortable with.

I'm surprised no one has warned you about the heat. Expect three to four weeks of over 100 degree weather in the summer every year. Most winters will have a couple weeks a little below freezing. Some winters have as many as six weeks below freezing with a couple below 20.

There are lots of way to escape the heat.

alright maybe "ghetto" isn't the right word, how about "run down" or "in need of repair".

IMO there are many places that are nicer and not far away

i would definitely describe placer county as rustic, that is a gorgeous area of california, it's the just sprawl of sacramento is ugly. it reminds of of those dying towns back east that have lost there industry and are starting to decay

theres many small towns just outside the sprawl that are really nice though, like placerville to the east or yuba to the north or davis to the west,

That's bizarre. I went to the University of Cincinnati. I lived 2 blocks from the projects and less than a mile from "Over the Rhine" where there are frequent shootings, riots, and every other home has boarded up windows. Sirens, gun shots, helicopters and warnings of various varieties were common. That was the ghetto.

The first time I went to what I was told was the ghetto in Fairfield I literally laughed in their face and explained that home values in the ghetto are $10,000 if you can find a buyer, boarded up and abandoned often being preferred.

The entire Sacramento area with very few exceptions is affluent, prosperous and beautiful in comparison. There is no snow in the winter and the summers are dry and the temperature is such that you can go bike riding, rollerblading or rock climbing and day. It's 70 and sunny today and I've barely had to even put on a jacket this so-called winter. I don't remember a day in the 30's since I've been in Sac. It doesn't mean that there haven't been a few, I just remember most weeks having some days like today.

All of the areas mentioned above are BMW laden and I'm willing to bet far safer than any of the >1 million people cities in the Midwest.

Hahaha I never new Vacaville was da creme de la creme..............Just bustin your chops!

Like any where in the country it has it's good and bad. I grew up in just about every ghetto in the greater Sac area.............Meadowview, Del Paso Heights, North Highlands, Strawberry Manor, to name a few and none of them are as bad these days as they were 15 years ago.

If you plan on buying just find a Agent that has been in the area a long time and they will know what is what.

Folsom is really nice and upscale but too Grey Poupon for my liking hahahahaha

Folsom has it's Baconaise neighborhoods too. I think they've done a good job with the growth in Folsom. My parents have lived there since 1974.
