Mixing Acanthurus

Is it possible to mix Acanthurus tangs? I would like an Achilles, Powder Blue and Clown Tang in my 340g (72x30x36).

(My last question this evening) :p

I would do it but put them in all at once. I have a dussumieri tang and orangeshoulder in the same tank that is a 96x24x24 along with a different family in the sailfin. But the three mentioned are probably a little more aggressive. Still would do it in that size tank.

I would say no.
Clowns [if they live] can be holy terrors as adults. The other two MIGHT be okay if placed in the tank at the same time but I would not take the chance. I think it would be best to choose one from this Genus and choose 2 other Tangs of a different Genus

I'd also be very leary of the clown tang.

If I were doing it, I would be adding the Clown tang last and make sure he's smaller than the rest. That way he'll be least likely to be dominant.

I'd also be alittle leary of your tank length. 6' is considered a minimum for the Acanthurus species which is fine for the Achilles and Powder Blue as they are some of the smaller Acanthurus tangs. But the Clown tang can get quite large and if it feels cramped your other tangs (and fish) will suffer for it.

I'd be tempted to do 2x Acanthurus tangs and 2x Zebrasoma's.

OR

2x Acanthurus and mated pair of Reef Safe Triggers. (I really like my new Bluethroat, lol)

I'd be into Bluethroats but I've just never seen them in Japan. If I did do these 3 fish I'd do the Achilles and the PBT first and then a tiny Clown last. I know Clowns can be agressive and I'm not putting any fish in the tank that I think amy have to remove. I have read about success stories with Clowns though.

I can't imagine how mean a clown trigger is, if it's worse than an achillies. I have an achillies in my 180 and he's brutal. chases everything...wrasses, anthia's, gobies, clowns. Good luck!

The 3 tangs that you chosed are not the easiest to keep. They all have bad records of making it, specially the Clown and Achilles. Also the PB and the Achilles are know to come down with ich very easy so you need to be careful as they may stress out from being in the same tank and get ich. If you worried about having to remove fish down the line I would skip the Clown tang and go with another tang.

I definitely want a good sprinkling of Tangs and I'd like a few that weren't so common. I'm hoping my system will be large enough and that my dedication will be enough to attempt a few fish that are considered difficult. I'm not worried about Ich as I put all fish through hypo before placing in the display. A collection of Achilles, PBT, Clown Tang, Emperor Angel and Regal Angel would look great as centrepiece fish.

If you check out HDTVGuy's thread he just got a big clown tang. It's a big.

(just thought you might want to look at it, if you haven't already)

Yes I added the clown tang last to the mix of all my tangs. I have a total of 8 tangs now!

The group get along just fine! No problems yet:D
