Monti Eating Nudi branch

Hi all,

I just got back from my trip to from that I have lost half of three of my montipora pieces to nudis, all within the same region of the tank (again). I purchased a frag a few weeks ago from the Coral Farmers market and which nudi's and I thought I killed them all but I was wrong. This is now the 2nd time I have gotten these in 3 months and is a pain to deal with and I don't have a lot of time to sit and examine each montipora piece for nudi's every night.

Is there any natural predator or additives that will kill these things? I have used tweezers to kill of the nudis and a tooth brush to scrap off the eggs and they still find areas in the monti to hide. To took out half of my SB Green Cap purple rim, Hispada, and baby blue Nodusa w/ green polyps.

Thanks,
Steve

Sorry no suggestion on how to cure it. Just thought ironic you would get the pests even from the high end coral farmers.

Hey Steve,

Some people have had good luck with yellow or green coris wrasse eating nudis.

If you had them before the market you can't say for sure that's where they came from. These things are near impossible to get rid of, anything short of removing every monty in that tank into QT for 6 months propably won't guarentee your tank is free of them.

Good luck with this battle, not everyone will laugh at your misfortune

Yeah it is. It was something that I wasn't expecting to get, but as much corals get passed around, traded, imported. I am no longer surprised as if I get these things anymore. It's just trying to treat them. So far my list for these types of bugs is the following.

Red Bugs - Interceptor
Flatworms - Iodine, Tropic Marine Pro Cure
Monti Nudis - Tweezers and Tooth brush to scrap of eggs

Just wondering if there was an easier way, since I don't have too much time to kill them and remove the eggs. Let them go a few days and they proliferate. Quite frustrating.

Hey Charles,

It was actually found on one of the monti-frags that I purchased from the coral farmers market (not going to tell who it was purchased from). My fiancee saw them when she was looking at the coral in the cup it was in. I took the 2 I saw off and scraped off the eggs and placed it in QT for days b4 putting it in my tank, which is was a mistake maybe I will wait a month, a few days later part of it had small white patches...which I thought might have been from the stress. They just got bigger so I used a flash light one night and saw them.

I'm not worried about getting them, it's just finding an easy way to get rid of them. I'm not sure about the coris wrasse in my tank ATM. I currently have a sixline and a yellow tail anapsis wrasse. So I am not sure how the other 2 wrasses will react if I put another type in.

Thanks,
Steve

I had them, I added a six-line wrasse and broke off the areas that they ate and it cured.

Yeah I got some nudis on a frag I bought at the Farmers Market. Fortunately I caught them in time before they spread...at least I hope...gulp! I even asked the vendor when I was buying them if he had them and he said he didn't! Just teaches you to always be careful and dip/qt your corals.

Thanks for the info all.

I didn't want to break of the any of the pieces, but as with all the suggestions, I think I may have to. Wish me luck with these little boogers. Lol, also I just realized all the grammer mistakes I had in the first post, my apology's, I haven't slept in 2 days.

Thanks,
Steve

I had them last year... They are absolutely horrible... Get a pipette, and some tweezers...

Also, take them into a bucket with iodine dip, and scrub the undersides to take eggs off.

I have seen coris wrasse work well... and heard raccoon butterflys work.

Finally have this under control for now on my most expensive colonies and have not seen them for a week and a half.

After looking further...the 2 monti's I had purchased from a particular vendor SWCFM was majorly infected. I ended up tossing them out since there were too many nook and crannies for them to hide in. Lesson learned for me.

Since the gestation and survival for the monti's I was told was 7 days...I should be able to start moving my moving my monti's back in about 2 more weeks (just to be safe).

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Sorry to hear that Steve. Remember, always quaratine (this coming from someone who did not and tossed all my montis just to get rid of the suckers) At least I know that vendor was not me! PM me who it was so I won't make the same mistake if you don't mind. I haven't bought an acro or monti in a while but you never knoow.

Hey Greg,

Sorry I really don't want to pass along that information. I don't want the person to lose business. You understand how it is...and no I did not get it from you Greg. Although I wished you brought more corals with you that day! :D

I hear ya. When I first started collecting acroporas and montiporas. I as in awe with the colors of the montipora's. I had spent a lot of money on finding the really nice colors (which some color variations I still have not seen yet).

Then one day I purchased a small colony of montipora nodosa. I did not realize what the nudibranches were back then and I thought...Cool! I have a bunch of these cool looking slugs....next thing I know I had lost all my monti's...I caught one on the glass and posted it in Dr Rons forum and found it was a monti eating nudi....so I stopped purchasing monti's for over a year.

Getting back into it within the past few months. I have collected a lot of nice pieces again, but nothing like what i had before (a few select are better, the rest cannot compare). After purchasing my 4th and 5th frag. I came across some nudi's so I immediately threw it into QT in hopes it did not spread. Luckly it did not...but the red monti cap did not survive. I was able to save the other frag.

Then my next occurance was the farmers market. Sorry for the long post.

Steve
