i been reading how people use a mouse pad to silent the pumps. I also have read that some people use it for the pump inside the sump. Is it safe to put a simple mouse pad inside the sump??

thanks

I've never seen someone putting the mouse pad in contact with the water. If you wanted to do that you would have to make sure that the mouse pad is made out of some corrosion proof material, and didn't have any emblems or writing or whatever else they may have stuck to it, on it. I would advise against doing this though, as you never know what may be in there just waiting to come out.

Put does little rubber sticky things, dont know the name. The have them in clear and black and different sizes. Usualy used for cabinet doors. You can get them at home depot. I put four, one in each coner under each of my Mag9.5. No more noise

Only draw back you move your pump allot there is a chance it can come loose, and BAMB your pump will jam. :)

Good Question... They have been on for a month now with no affect. I guess if you want to be on the safe side. Remove the glue with alcohol and then use super glue, the one you guys use for corals.

what do you think tangboy5000 sounds good?

those silicon potholder look solid... Like a hard plastic. But i am not sure... If it's hard it will still couse noise..

Manderx is it hard? Or rubbery?

If they're like the ones my wife bought, they are flexible. You can roll/wad them up. I think they would work great for vibration suppression.

No jokes this time, but next time...HA!

My Dolphin 1200 came with suction cups on the bottom which basically does the same thing, but I have also used neopreme that I cut from a old beat up wet suit. I would not use a mouse pad with graphics on it though.

hmmm.. I've had two cheap mousepads that I got from CompUSA sitting submerged in water over the past 5 months in my SPS tank's sump... I haven't noticed any negative effects affects.

also been using a couple mouse pads (plain $4 comp usa) in my sump with no ill effects...over a year now.

i was gonna chime in here earlier but i thought this side of the issue would have been covered by now.

ditto that- compusa had the cheapest mouse pads I could buy lol.

anyways.. I'm sure this issue has been covered before. Back when I first was setting up my tank I created a similar thread to this one about possible ill effects of a mousepad in water... people kinda laughed at me :( cuz everyone seemed to have it done... its rather discomforting to read this thread now.. people don't seem to like the idea of it

I agree - I've used neoprene mouse pad material in seawater with no ill effects for years... I generally use the rule of thumb "if it's safe for contact with human skin, it's safe for a reef tank." Alternatively, you could just lift the entire sump up on several layers of mouse pad material and get the same effect - I've used this approach too. - john.

I don't think people disagree with using a mousepad, it's the graphics that may be painted or stuck to it that are the problem. A plain old Neoprene mouse pad shouldn't cause any problems.

I too have asked the same question & the general consensus seems to be positive for the placement of mousepads in reef water (or any neoprene products for that matter).

I am about to place one in today, but to cover some unwanted growth in my tank & also for my GSP too grow & spread over on. Rather than growing directly on my BB tank floor.

For the attenuation of noise under your sump (outside the tank water) use Styrofoam that you can buy at the HD. It has a lot of air space that absorbs the vibrations & does wonders. Similar in concept, a sponge made by Fluval can be used in your sump. This is 1 3/4" thick, with a lot of air space & it's like magic. You can place this in your reef tanks. Right now I have two of these under my skimmer & noise-be-gone!

I have very sensitive neighbors who hear an 802 Aquaclear powerhead, but not my new setup!!!!

Just to be safe, could you just wrap it in a few layers of ziplock type bags. They shouldn't tear if you set it down on it flat, and would contain any possible toxins. Thats what I would do just to provide peace of mind.
