Moving LTA from rock to sandbed - help.

Hi

(I hope this is correct forum) I have LTA and people suggested that it should stay in the sandbed instead of on the rock. How do I move it down to the sandbed without hurting it? Thank you for your help.

My previous thread!

Thanks.

I didn't know that it was that easy. I will try it when I go home tonight. (I will put up my glove - clean plastic bag also).

If its in the rock then leave it, if it wants to be in the sand it will move on its own. Its better to let it go on its own then to force it, because then you chance it ripping its foot..

Yes. That must be it. Everytime I turn on the light the LTA is so happy and immediately expanded to fullness within 5 minutes.

I was thinking of upgrade the light. However, I got one of those Odyssea bow front unit that everything comes into 1 piece. If I want to do anything with it, I will have to remove the top and redo the filter.

Now I finally "begin" to realize that this is an expensive hobbie.

if your nem isn't wandering, it's probably happy.
They will always close when lights are off, and open when they come on.
I'm having problems posting pics, but look on my gallery.
My nem has been on the same rock for 4 years.
It's 12 - 14'' now and happy and healthy

big elephant... aw i have the same tank as you! mines a 45 odesea bowfront... i hate it!!!! lol i have a skimmer hanging off the front right now. Im going to completely rip off the back, allowing the water to breath, put the skimmer in the back, add 2 maxi jet pumps to replace the crap it came with.

Im thinking of taking off the lights and adding better ones but my lfs assures me they are great lights. im not to sure my bta hasent stopped moving since the day i got it. Your lights are not powerful enough to have a lta on the sand bed!!!

IT MOVED.

I woke up this morning and see my nem all the way down on the sandbed. It is at least 12 inches down. I didn't see the move though.

It must know that we are talking about this and decide to move down.

Tourkid,

I brought that tank for it was looking good. I thought it would be great for the Salt water tank. I WAS WRONG. I have checked with LFS, they told me that they don't recommend different light since it might melt the top. The only way that I am gonig to put any other light on it is to rip out the top and redo it.

Also, I can't put a skimmer at all. I can probably buy a hang over unit, but it will look ugry in there. I can't imaging how it would look on the front though.

I did get a maxi jet 1200. At least I can try to increase the flow and I will incrase the time on the light. See how that works.

I had guessed that it would probably move. When I recommended placing it on the sandbed before, I was unaware that it had already attached. If it attaches to any hard surface, you do not want to move it for risk of tearing the pedal disc. Now that it is in the sand, you may want to use a piece of pvc (large diameter) and fill it with sand on top of your existing sand bed. Your lighting---what exactly is it again? Was it pc and how many? the 46bf is a bit tall, imo, for just one or two bulbs. You can, however, feed it very well, but it is hard to say whether it has enough light. Also, cover the intake of the powerhead well, or else the anemone can be mangled by it.

elephant, oh ya i would def. take the whole lid off when i add better lights, ill hafta get a whole unit, those ballests only support 65 watts the whole thing does suck. a skimmer looks terrible on the front, but i have to wait for next water change before i can start constraction on tank (tons of rocks piled on my pump thing too) but it'll be worth it. a skimmer is a must.. now that i have one :)
my nitates were climbing, its actually hanging where the lid lifts and you put food in or whatever pretty ugly

i told my lfs how bad they were for saltwater and wished theyd never suggested it, but they dident listen and they just got tons more in

elephant, ill def. show you. i cant wait. Im doing it this way

On water change day, im going to change the water, and save the water i took out. put all my LR in it that will be in my way

fish is in QT so thats no issue

removing the back and the pump

going to add 2-3 big chunks of new LR (i dont have enough base rock, keeping it under 15 pounds tho)

hanging skimmer on the back, and adding the 2 600 maxi jets i bought

I may have to add a hang on filter wheel for carbon nsuch, not sure if skimmer and LR will be enough filter

my nitrates are through the roof right now, so i have to get a handlew on that first :(

heres a pic last week. i have a beautiful anemone but she was in the back that day

b4 skimmer hanging on front lol

ill have after pics in about a week im hoping :)

whoo yaaaaa ive been working for exactly 5 hours on my odyesea
tank and let me tell you. it is sooooo worth ripping it apart and taking off the top!!!

1st.. let me say what a descusting dirt trap it really was. yuk

it was really really easy

I bought 2, 3 pound base rocks, took 5 gal. out, but some of my existing rocks in the bucket that would be in my way. added the base rock, rearranged my rock forever... i love it, i dident know what to do when i got the tank, and my rock work is better now

put my skimmer on the back, and a hangon filter 2 maxi jets inside and a wave maker

added 5 gal of new salt water

it makes the whole system more accessable

elephant, i been wanting to ask you. do you have a heat problem when your lights are on? i have/had to keep my tank at a constant 82 because it climbed that high with lights on

Im betting i can lower my temp now. slowllllly of course

Its still pretty cloudy, so im going to leave you in antisapation for the pictures

btw.. i was at my lfs and i was complaining to the assistant manager about the odysea tanks while we got the rock

apparently, she bought one exactly 5 weeks ago, just got it cycled and the ballest blew. she said they are going to stop carrying them finally :)

That is great! Can't wait to see that new tank.

I am terrible with the rock work. No matter how hard I do, it still looks like "#$*(#$". I guess that isn't one of my talents.

I don't know that light / heat issue. It still pretty much the same. Perhaps that is due to the fact that I turn it on for 5-6 hrs. I am doing the 7 hours now with the timer (finally brought it). I will see how that goes.

What are the things that you need to have when you redo your tank? I know that you have a QT tank to put in the fish. What about other invertibles? How did they survey? When you put in the new LR, doesn't the tank goes to recycle again? That generally have amonina spike. How did your animals take it? Just wondering how you do it.

ok

cycling new rock... My lfs says, if you keep it under 10 or 15 pounds (in a 45 gal) that there shouldent be any ill effects
I only added 6, and they are huge pieces
(I dident have enough rock to correctly balance my bacteria.. (natural filter) so Im better off adding slowly anyway

The Qt tank.. I dont think you need this unless you have alot of fish, I just moved things slowly. Each rock I moved, I put in the bucket.. so i dident have alot of tumbling or anything.
My 1 single fish is in QT, but thats because shes sick with a bacteria infection. Im scared of qt tanks, hard to keep things stable.

My invertabrates... I ony have 1 anemone, 15 hermits and 4 snails... oh, and two hitchhiker crabs. I left them all in there (unless they were stuck to a rock I was moving) They are all perfectly fine, The anemone was catching all the particles flying around, she stayed open the whole time (wished she would have closed) She was stuxk to a lil rock that was on my substrate floor so I dident need to worry about her being stuck to two rocks. wouldent have done it at all if she was

Flowers n polyps.... they closed while being moved (i kept all coarls n such in the main and just pushed em over to one side) they all opened as soon as they were settled

the animals seem to be enjoying the new LR actually, all the hermits i have are on these 2 rocks. better algea i guess lol

ok i took pics, water isent crystal clear yet though, skimmer takes awhile to re adjust.

im sure you dont have a skimmer, ill give you the advice i was given ... without a skimmer... theres no point in having a tank, and even if you need to take out a bank loan, just do it

ive had my tank 5 months, and i would have avoided a few issues if i would have had it sooner

ok. im uploading now, posting in a second :)

we should ask for a sticky 'stay away from odysea tanks' lol they LOOK great....

ok this is b4 for any lookers...

dont need much clearance at all for this skimmer (coral life 65) but its wayyy cheaper online!
DSCF0890.jpg

If you have enough live rock and a skimmer, you dont HAVE to have a hang on filter, but i have issues..
