I've been thinking about doing corals but everyone tells me its so difficult. I'm going to do some research on feeding and lighting but I think im ready for corals. This tank has been established for about 2 years without much problem. I've recently installed an RO/DI unit and a UV sterilizer which made a huge difference in warter clarity and quality.

Your tank looks so clean and clear. I just started up my 46 gallon bowfront. It has been up an running for about a month but I can't seem to get rid of those pesky microbubbles. What is that clear box that you have in the upper left back corner of your tank? Does that help to outflow of bubbles? I've seen it on a number of tanks. Any advice you can give me would be great. THanks!

Thanks, but why do you say i've made some bad decisions in the way of fish? Is it because i've got a foxface in there?

That clear box in the upper left corner is the overflow box for my wet/dry filter. What type of filter do you have? You must either have a canister or a backpack type filter if not a wet/dry. I also had a problem with micro bubbles when I was using a POS SeaClone 150 skimmer. I switched to a CPR and the micro bubbles stopped.

It's probably because of the Hippo you have in there. It will easily outgrow the tank eventually and should be in a tank at least twice that size. But I'm not the Tang police, I was just making an assumption.

I bought the tang when he was just a little thing and he's grown quite well and fast. I do have an 80Gallon freshwater that I would love to convert to a reef tank. I will never get rid of the blue tang, i really like that fish. The current equipment I have should scale up to the 80 gallon with an exception to the single cpr backpack skimmer. That I will probally have to upgrade.

eh, i hope he does alright. in a tank that small a blue hippo will EASILY succumb to stress even after being in a tank for ages...he needs at LEAST 120 to do well...if not more.

I would suggest maybe just swapping him out for another baby. current doesn't affect size. Once again, every rule has some way of being broken and he may do fine, but watch for color loss and loss of apetite (working at a LFS you tend to hear and see this quite a bit)

Thanks for the advice, im hoping to soon upgrade the 46 to my 80 gallon. When he out grows the 80 I will probally trade him in for a smaller one.


Have you heard of problems keeping the foxface?

IME both the tang and the foxface will out grow your 46. Infact my foxface was the reason i moved form my 46 to a 120. even though he is still way small i wanted to move him before it even became questionable (and i could always use an excuse to upgrade).
