...my battle with dinoflagellates is on!

I'm still wondering how a newbie like myself could end up with dinoflagellates!
I only started in the hobby 5 months ago and I've tried to learn as much as I possibly could NOT to make mistakes so as to avoid this type of situation.
I've purchased all my "stuff" new. I've been obsessing over keeping the tank clean and the skimmer fine-tuned in. Seriously? What happened?:sad2:
I read on a website that silicates are the cause and could have come from a dirty RO/DI cartridge. OK, but my BRS RO?DI is just nearly 5 months old. Could that be possible? Or, I was thinking could it be the (gray) Brute 20 gallon barrel that I mix my saltwater in?
Well, the battle is on. I covered the 75 gal. tank with a tarp(lights out) and am going to dose 7 ml hydrogen peroxide twice daily. I'll take the tarp off in 3 days but continue to dose for maybe 2 weeks. Hopefully this will work. I read it has worked for some and not for others! We'll see.
Sorry for the long read. I'm just feeling discouraged and ready to call it quits, as much as I've been enjoying watching the corals I have grow.
Any input(ideas)or encouragement will be appreciated.
Thanks!

May the force be with you....

Good luck- don't feel discouraged i had an incident with copper about 4 months in - killed all my inverts- i was ready to quit then but kept going and 8 months later i have am awesome tank and some cool inverts. Good luck

I'm just feeling discouraged and ready to call it quits,

if your ready to quit over dinos, then you have a long, long road ahead of you. things happen in this hobby, sometimes dayly, that make us all want to pull our hair out.

floods
fires
stn
rtn
BUGS
exploding halides
floating LEDS

bla,bla,bla

you have to love the hobby alot to stay with it.

That isnt a joke... Only true reefers stay at it for longer than a year or two, or more... There is no rule for it, but you know by the amount of stress you put yourself through, lol...

+1000 to Chris and Neal. This hobby can definitely get frustrating fast and sometimes it seems like everything you do will turn to crap but on the good days it makes it all worth while or at least thats what I keep telling myself anyways, lol

Dino's are usually introduced to your system by live rock or frags/rock. That's how it got in my system & destroyed it...wish u luck bud

Chriskid, Bubba and Pallobi,Tweaked,

Thanks for the whipping. I came to this website for ideas and maybe a little encouragement. I should have known better.
If you can't say something that will encourage and teach a newbie then it would be best to zip it. Don't even respond would be the best thing you could do.
To many people here are too critical on this forum, I noticed that.
Thanks for nothing...going to find another reef tank website.
I'm done here.

Wow, I didn't think anything that was said was negative..... I think what they were saying was you gotta roll with the highs and lows of reef keeping....... But if you want to be a baby about then go ahead and find another reef site!!

wow, your right, move on. some dont like the sad truth i guess.

what i ment wuz if this minor problem is all it takes to set you over the edge, then perhaps your money should go to something more suitable to your "throw in the towel attitude".

if this angers you this much then it will not be long before you quit anyway.

Wow man I don't think those guys meant to run you off with their posts. I've been here a min or two and have seen all sorts of ups and downs with people's tanks. I've had quite a few of my own including dino's in my 20L that was once a zoa frag tank but now my qt/hospital tank. I think they merly meant to say there are ups and downs in this hobby but if you stick with it the rewards are pretty cool.

In my 20L I had it pretty easy, nothing in nothing out. I stopped doing water changes and simply let the algae "burn itself out". After it used up whatever it needed from the water it just died off. I haven't had it in my other tanks and didn't do anything special to get rid of it. I did read a big thread on another forum about using peroxide and I think the general consensus was that it worked. Good luck with your battle man. Perhaps you can share with us what worked for you.

Stay reefy

No offense from me, was simply chiming in that this hobby is full of problems typically. Sorry I came off that way.

Back to the issue. You are on the right track in checking water source, however what are your phosphates at as well? I have also read the Brute debate, but after a year of running two, I have not seen any problems. My wife had a dino/bacteria issue and we tracked down to the membrane in the rodi unit needing to be replaced. That and running chemi pure/GFO/purigen etc. good luck

I ran purigen in my system when i got them right off the bat. I didnt have much by way of filtration at that point but between that (purigen), w/c every other day and un intended lights out (shattered my bulb) they were gone in a week.

I have also heard that but Anthony and me both share the same brute trash can at his house for mixing salts and we have also not seen any issue. We both did have out brakes of Hair alage, Anthony got his under controle were I just started a new tank LOL...wanted a bigger one anyways.

I had my GHA outbreak and did the same thing in my JBJ- there wasnt much in it by way of coral and moved it to other systems

Cycle dry rock and sand and water...once dinoflagellates or diatoms bloom add a clean up crew....another week or two and that is under control, then you can begin adding easy to keep corals and fish as long as the levels stay in the acceptable parameters.

All part of starting up in a tank/hobby. Best of luck!
