My cheap wavemaker

I started out with a Chauvet SF-4005, this will allow you to run 2-4 power heads. You can either run them 2 on and 2 off or have them cycle though all 4 one at a time. I'm only using two power heads so I have it set to 2 channel and set it on the slowest speed which will switch them ever two minutes.

I also cut the nozzles off my Maxi-Jet power head to make them shoot a wider stream of water out two different directions. This is because as the power is turned off and on the propeller can spin either way making the water come out either to left or to the right. See movie below.

In the movie you can see how when the powerhead is pointing straight the water alternates between left and right.

Water Switching Power Head

Now in the tank, I have two powerheads alternating shooting currents 2 different directions. So as the power alternate on and off between the powerheads it can shoot current in a choice of 4 different directions. Did that make sense ???

what is the cost of the device? as long as it works i dont' think it matters how much it cost.

where did you buy this ?

What kind of time intervals can you set this device for ? I see in your video what appears to be an interval of just a second or two... I think I like that.. but how long can these intervals get ? I guess I am asking is what is the range ?

Finally, I did a search and see that tis device was made for lighting systems.. given that I do not really understand electronics all that well, do you have any idea if it is a good long term solution for driving powerheads ? How long do you have yours running for ?

Thanks,
Allen

In the video I had it set to fast because I just want to show how the powerhead switched flow directions.

Depending which setting you choose, you can set it anywhere from 1 second to 15 minutes.

I got my at instrumentpro.com for 29.99 (shipped).

I can not comment on the durability becuase mine has only been running for about a week. I would say they should be good because they are built to work in smokey/dirty night clubs.

cooool !

Hey maybe you should re-brand these and sell them within the reef trade... compared to ther wave timers, they are a bargain !

Thanks,
Allen

Rocketpop cool find.

I did a search and found that it is made for DJ lighting effects. The interesting thing about this is that it can be triggered by sound. You can actually hook it to a sound source and depending on the music that you choose, it can produce a random pattern of currents. Good or bad, I'm not sure but it's an option.

Dean.

i was thinking of ordering one of those too...sounds really good...how much time should u have the powerheads set inbetween? is it bad for powerheads to be going on and off tho? will they last alote shorter or what???
thanks

Wired to sound? :) I'm thinking of the SpongeBob where he brings the jellyfish home to party! :) Can you tell I have kids?

Great idea here. I will really have to look into that more.

BTW, I'm 30 and love sponge bob and I don't have any kids. Now that is just sad... LOL...

No nieces or nephews of my own. However, I can blame my girlfriend's nieces that introduced me to the show.

Yeah, that sounds logical...

LOL..

Just bought one of these myself . . . . am going to hook it up tomorrow.

It comes wired with a plug so no wiring.

Can't wait to see what it'll do.
