It is dark colored and as porous as the base rock that I bought.
If I boil it will it be safe to use? Should I do anything else but boil it?

upload them to photobucket or something similiar and cut and paste the image code here in the forum and it should display the pics when you post...

That is not always true. Randy Holmes Farley (Im sure that I misspelled his name) Did some looking into the lava rock thing a while back and told me that it would be safe. I guess that the term "lava rock" is subjective but I think that most people have the same idea as to what the term means. Pics would help.

i have a big chunck of lava rock in my display its mostly covered in coriline now it hosts lots O worms good ones.

It doesn't look to be very porus.....it looks pretty cool thou it would at least make some nice aquascaping for a fo. Tank.....do you know where your dad found it???? It might help in determining what kind it is.........

Is it really light? It is definitely volcanic or heat created originally. If it is very light (not dense), it is probably some form of pumice which should be fine. If not who knows.. Should be ok in fish only, but there is always the risk of chemical leaching.

If it's pumice it'll float. I'd boil it or soak it for a few days then leave it in the sun to bleach, you don't know what's got into it in the ground.

I would say most of the peices are only slightly heavier than my base rock.

JBrown I live in Saranac Inn too, there is Tri Lakes Aquarium in Malone which is around 1hr 15 min away. They have a small selection but is decent priced, and all of mine have been healthy. Just be sure you know everyhting you need to know because the guy owner tells you many htings which are incorrect.

Then there is Bridge Street Aquarium in Plattsburg. Mainly a saltwater fish store, nice selection but jack up prices.

There is animal house pet shop too. All around petshop has small saltwater selection but has different fish then the normal one. Decent priced but you have to know what the fish requirements are etc. My favorite place for around here. Its also in Plattsburg.
