My foam rockwork

i decided to make a false wall in the corner of my tank using some insulation foam followed by some sprinkling of crushed oyster shells and a few coats of paint. i think it turned out pretty good. a lot better than i expected it to be for me just playing around with it.

behind it is going to be my heaters and some powerheads. theres a few holes in the foam that i made so current would go through the foam and give some future frags on the ledges some good concealed water flow.

enjoy :)

PS please forgive the salty tank walls

"IMPRESSIVE..." (like darth vader would say it)

looks real good. what sort of paint(s) did you use? you did a superb job of making it look like coralline!

just used krylon... well, a more expensive kind of krylon i dont remember which exactly. but someone on here (RC) did it with krylon and has been running it successfully in his tank :) so i figured i would try...

does it even look like rock? lol i haven't fully decided yet ;)

Looks great! They do make the "great stuff" insulator in black, just for future projects. It is listed under pond materials on Foster and Smith. Is your tank glass? If so did it stick well? I have heard that it will not adhere to glass only acrylic. Keep us UTD on how it goes once water is back in it. Awesome job!

i didn't apply it to the glass, i put it on eggcrate that i structured in the general shape i was wanting.... then i trimmed it up, and i'm going to stick it in the tank using silicone. i will definately keep this thread utd on the workings of this little project.

btw, can't decide if i want to leave the starboard bottom with lots of flow to keep det off the bottom or if i should put a 40 lb bag of aragonite sand down?

If you are going to go with mostly SPS (which equals high flow) corals I think the starboard BB looks great. Thanks for the other info. I have been wanting to try this.

ok so i've let it cure for a while, and siliconed it down to the bottom of the tank.... filled up the tank today and put in about 1" of sand. i sat around and gazed at it for a while liking what i saw. then all of a sudden... RRRRRRRRRRRIP!!!! the silicone gave way and the foam thing almost shot out of the tank. :(

so....

i drained the tank yet again, pulled out all the sand. dried the bottom. and went and got somemore foam in a can from walmart. i put the foam in place and foamed around it and from behind it. i let that dry a bit and put some of the purple paint on the spots i could get to. some of it i can't get to and won't get painted... it will just eventually cover with coralline anyways. so now i'm sitting here letting it cure and dry fully. and this weekend, i'll be adding the sand back and putting in all my water again. i'll have pics up once i get that far :)

sorry for the novel

well i foamed it to the glass and the starboard on the bottom yesterday, let it dry, then painted what i could get to....

it looks good so far! hope its strong enough. i'll get pics up soon
