My ORA Red Planet arrives today!!

Ok, I'm super pumped about this coral's arrival. It is coming directly from ORA through my LFS so it is purchase I'm making without seeing the actual frag, so, keep your fingers crossed! It will of course come in on one of the hideous ORA plastic frag plugs ( hey ORA it you are reading this we all hate your frag plugs!!) but I have predrilled a piece of LR and will fit the plug into it and secure it with a bit of epoxy.

The coral will go into my 40B and be illuminated by 2 X 150 14K Phoenix HQIs and 4 X 39w T5s. To get the best mix of greens and reds I am placing the coral very low in the tank and it will receive a moderate to strong flow.

I'll post pics later, if it is half a brilliant as the RP posted earlier this week I'll be very happy.

First pics- just acclimated and mounted. ORA sent me an awesome piece- very nicely encrusted plug, great green color. I'll post more later with the lights on.

how can you tell a RED PLANET from red millie? I think i have a red planet but it doesn't have the green. i've read that a lot of people lost the green as time goes by.

That's easy- the invoice said Red Planet!!! JK- I think the red millie lacks the green but you're right some peoples RP have totally gone red or pink. From my understanding the color stays better if kept under lower light. This is my plan as I have mounted it low next to my Tyree Rainbow stylo- which also keeps it's colors in less light.

can the green comes back? so, it's pretty impossible to tell once it'd lost it's color huh?

Good question, I'm not sure with the RP. I know that on some corals that were totally browned or bleached out return to their original glory when return to their preferred lighting.

I had the green go on mine but my purple bonsai is more green than purple. It would help to have a PAR range for color so I know where to place. Hate to break it loose just to try to get green back.

keep that beast low. i lost most of my green where i mounted mine, took a few months but i plan on moving it once i move myself. but i have to say, you scored a killer frag, mine was a nub at best that was encrusted over the plug

Thanks Laurier- I was just looking at other reefer's RPs- there are some great looking colonies on RC.

I work at an LFS and we have never had an ORA red planet frag that was that large come in! They must be getting more and more of it. Last time we had a piece of it in was about 3-5 mths ago.

Nice piece man! I ordered one as well with some Tyree Pink Lemonade Acro and Montipora Setosa from midwestfrags I hope mine is just as big and nice! I hope my Tyree is nice too!!!

I broke mine into 3 pieces and mounted them all at different depths. One is right under (6"-8") my 20k 400 watt Radium, super red no green, one is at about 18" very dark maroon with green high lights, the last is 28" down it is almost totally green. Everyone thinks they are 3 different corals. All from the same frag. All look totally different. I love this coral.

I agree, some of the one that are totally pink/magenta are very nice. The coral in your avatar is that one of yours?
