i have 120 reef which i recently changed my substrate notieced that my tank has cycled itself again. but the problem is there's and abnormaly high alage growing on the glass and substrate. its like a brown mat looking stuff. to make things worse my shimmer has not been working right. it has always worked great. it's a aqua c urchin, less than a year old. it doesnt skim anything anymore now that the alage started. the worst thing is that it started working again but it only seems to skim water at a rate so fast it can fill a 2 liter in hours. i noticed this because it flooded my floor and down to my basement. what the heck is going on with all this? please help because i'm clueless at this point.

sponge man, I recently (3 wks ago) completely redid my tank. I completely changed out my sand and all my rock. I had a very bad case of algae and didn't want to fight it anymore. My tank had to do a complete recycle also. About a week ago, the brown algae (cyano maybe?) started growing all over my sand and rocks. I think it is just a part of a new cycle. I'm hoping it will eventually go away in a couple of weeks. I don't think it is a real big deal.

Sorry, can't help you with the skimmer problem.

Hmmm, sounds like a couple things going on. First, the skimmer sounds like the air injector needs to be cleaned. I would take it apart and give it a very thorough cleaning, make sure there are not pieces of snail shells, algae or other debris clogging the air device. Make sure the pump feeding the skimmer is working correctly as well. Sometimes taking it all apart and cleaning it is all it takes to get a skimmer functional again.

As for the algae problem, what are your current levels: Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, specific gravity, etc. Are you using purified RODI water?? Water changes can work wonders when things go astray. Removing a substrate can nuke a tank. If all you have is algae problems, consider yourself lucky.
