Nano -> 50G in a health food store. (upgrade)

Here's the LEDs sitting on the tank just for a peak. The rodi is at the ranch in the old milkhouse. There just wasn't any place I could set it up at our store.

Just got this handheld jigsaw for $19.99 at Wal*Mart. I'll use it to cut a place out for mounting my Chauvet power panel. And other uses for reef related projects.

About a month ago I emailed reefdynamics.com about a nano version of their bio-pellet reactor I heard from an episode of lafishguys.com. Here's the conversation:

Dear folks,

Will you be coming out with a nano version of your NOPO reactor?
~me
Mr. Powers,

Thank you for the e-mail. I do have plans for an HOB/NANO Bio-Pellet reactor. As soon as the current backlog of Bio-Pellet reactors is shipped out I can get to work on testing the design I have in mind. I hope to release it sometime in April/May of this year.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, I will be happy to help.

Sincerely,

Okay here's an update after 3 months.

I gave my hermit away because I think he was killing my fish. Since then I've got much better luck, like keeping a sixline wrasse for 2 months now and I also have a small ocellaris and blue/green chromis.

I have a SeaClone hanging off the back of my tank instead of the Eshopps psk-75. The seaclone is a much better skimmer. A much BETTER skimmer! I have a 20 long gallon sump now with a filter sock, a pH probe, and an ORP probe. I will calibrate them with solutions that are on their way here. Also have a nitrate and alkalinity test kits coming.

My fish are eating like PIGS!! I feed them a frozen cube 3 times a week and flakes on the other days.

I fear my nitrates are really high due to overfeeding with frozen. There's a rock covered with red slime algae so waiting for the test kit and I'll set up a pellet reactor too.

looks like you are having fun...they say bioballs/wet/dry/trickles are nitrate factories, because well, ... they are. Its what they are designed to do. they are designed to make ammonia->nitrite->nitrate....no further than that. They dont belong in a reef tank.

It is not the bioballs/wet/dry/trickles that convert the nutrients but the bacteria that live on them. It is the same bacteria that live in liverock and livesand.

What difference does it make where the bacteria live?

Today I think I'll take my rock that's covered in red slime and was it off in the sink.

I think that's all it will take.

Boy some people panic when they see that and shell out lotsa money. I can't wait to see if the rinsing in the sink works. I'll let you all know.

That's all it took!!

A little rinsing and a little scrubbing with a toothbrush!!

Got rid of 99% of the red slime algae. I treated the outbreak, now to find the cause and pull it out by the roots so to speak.

Now I've got some turf algae. I tested with a Red Sea nitrate kit and it came up with less than 1 ppm. With no water changes in a couple months and a lot of overfeeding.

Bought a royal gramma. Some zoos. getting ready to take some 1 year pix next month. My glass is always very dirty.

Okay with my glass always dirty, I'm going to try a bio-pellet reactor. I will channel reactor effluent along with water directly from overflow into my gravity fed ASM G3 skimmer.

Right now overflow water is going to filter socks and accumulating uneaten food instead of being ingested by bacteria that is on pellets and going down the line to be skimmed out.

Time to put these socks away.

Okay first picture: BRS reactor housing, a fitting, and the tumble cartridge.

Second picture: maxi-jet 1200 powerhead and a fitting.

Third: impeller for maxi-jet, impeller housing, and ball-valve for powerhead.

Last: cheap plumbing for jbj chillers: The hose puts the reactor's output into the overflow through a J-tube.

How much GFO?

How much GFO?

Granular Ferric Oxide? to control phosphates? I have a BRS canister filter, a 29 gallon aquarium with about 9 gallons in the sump, 5 small fish, and a few zoas.

I tested nitrates with a red sea test and had no detectable NO3. My skimmer is pulling a lot of nasty crud (SeaClone rated at 100 gallons) and I feed heavy but have to clean glass almost daily. I don't have a PO4 test kit but am looking at the red sea one and the hannah checker, is the hanna worth $50? I was about to set up a biopellet reactor but I think I'll convert it to tumble GFO until red slime and glass nasties subside.

So... the granules fall through the cartridge when I shake it. Do I use a sponge disk on the bottom? How much do I use?

put some neon trumpets, duncans, dendros in there cause everyone loves them and i think you should put a maxima lam in there that would be sweet.

Okay I would do trumpets if they came on a frag plug. Same with duncans.

Dendros? No. They're non-photosynthetic and have to be spot fed. I wouldn't do it for just a few polyps.

I don't know how my fireball angel would do with a clam. So I wouldn't attempt it until I upgrade to a 50 gallon.

I would like to try a nano pack again. Of softies? Thoughts?

LOL The only problem is, as far as I know, I'm the only reefer in this little town. That means there won't be any exposure to prospective customers from this thread about our store.... as far as I know.

Well, we actually wouldnt know if u were from a small town as your location doesnt specify where youre from. U could be from NY city for all we know :)

NYC?

Check out my custom use title: Does "Sasquatch hunter" mean anything to you? Do you think I could hunt those in New York City? Well do ya?
