Nano Box Reef Mini (LED FIXTURE)

Due to a job opportunity, I had to significantly downsize my tank to a small Innovative Marine 8g Nuvo. I was able to take a few pieces of rock from my main tank, and a few of my favorite corals. Not doing fish at this time. Regardless...the lighting unit I chose to light this little guy was the Nano Box Reef Mini. Here are the details and my review:

Company: Nano Box Reef (Nano Box Reef - Custom LED Aquarium Lighting)
Fixture: Mini Tide (full spectrum LED) w/ Tank Gooseneck
Driver: Nano Box Reef 2 Channel Dimmable - 700mA
Channel 1: 1 Natural White, 1 Cool White, 1 Warm White, and 2 Violet
Channel 2: 2 Royal Blue, 2 Blue, 2 Cyan (I think...Dave will Clarify)

The Quality: The quality of this unit is impeccable. The finish is flawless, the wiring is clean and the sleeves add a great professional touch to the unit. The gooseneck is also very strong and sleek. The cables are hidden through the gooseneck!

Light Output: This thing is perfect for my Nuvo 8...which is roughly 11x11x10ish inches....but I would recommend this light for any tank up to a 14'' cube. The 700mA that both of these channels can reach is more than enough to support any coral type in the proper tank size.

The Color: Oh man....this is one of the main reasons I left the LED world a couple years ago. I've had a custom unit by Nano Box Reef in the past, I have had an AI Nano, and I have made 2 of my own custom LED units, and I couldn't stand the coloring of ANY of them! As some of you may know, LED's that are assembled in the standard Royal Blue / Cool White combo, have a very icy blue coloring to them...which is super harsh on photography as well as the naked eye. This is why I ended up switching back to T5HO with ATI bulbs. Well my friends....this unit right here has gotten me back into the LED world! The full spectrum coloring achieved by the intricate selection of LED's on the Mini Tide makes for a WONDERFUL view! The coloring is much more satisfying than my recent T5HO setup w/ full ATI bulbs...and that is saying a lot! Photos turn out nice, and my corals show their natural beauty!

Customer Service (I am a stickler on this no matter where I buy from): Flawless! It looks like Dave really has this lineup set in stone, and there were absolutely no gaps in communication what-so-ever. I asked Dave when he could ship the unit before I paid him, and even after the payment and a week later...he shipped on time and the unit was delivered in one day! One week turn-around for a custom LED unit? HECK YEAH!

Photos (unedited): I tried to get the light in the picture as much as possible.

Conclusion:
This is a great unit for pico/nano tanks, if not the best on the market. Sure, there are other good units out there....but good luck finding one that is full spectrum like this! For its size, the Nano Box Reef Mini Tide cannot be beat. Customer service was great, the quality is amazing, the product was created and is assembled in the USA....what more could you ask for? Amazing LED fixture all around. No complaints.

Im interested in this little light for my 10" cube, but have a couple of questions.

Is it available yet because it doesn't appear on Nano Box Reef products?

Can the channels be dimmed?

How much is it?

How big is the fixture?

Does it come with the gooseneck included?

THX in advance

So how does that compare to the kessil pendent 150w?

Kessil 150w is non-dimmable, while the Nano Box Mini has 2 dimmable channels. The Nano Box Mini is also full spectrum, while the kessil is not.

I'll try to get Nano Box in here to answer your questions :)

Cool THX

Could you pics with the tank on several dimmed colors like 12k, 16, 20k? the pictures you posted are on each channel at 100%? it looks like 12k, I wanna aim for a 20k look.

THX in advance

Sure! I like the 12k look...hence the current photos - haha. Right now its at about 15% blue channel, 25% white/violet channel.

Any other users out there with thoughts on the Nano Box Mini - Tide / Coralux Storm controller combination?

I ended up ordering the Nano Box Mini Tide from Dave with the Coralux Storm X controller and have had it for a couple days now basically bench testing it before I put it into service later this week. My install is somewhat unique so I asked Dave to ship it partially assembled for me to complete the install to my liking. He was awesome about taking pictures and labeling things so my part of the assembly was painless and actually kinda fun because it made me thing about how it all works and also gave me a great idea to make my particular install even better.

Super happy with what I have seen so far and among other things I think these guys are going to continue to make great strides in the pico space for lighting. Ben at Coralux has been very helpful as I peppered him with questions about the controller before buying in. I don't like surprises so I ask a lot of questions up front. The controller is easy to navigate and very user friendly. Also, he has been open minded about making improvements to his web site that I feel have improved the overall end user experience, i.e. making clarifications and additions to the user manual. The details in his manual led to the customization of my Nano Box Mini Tide, adding a third channel to take full advantage of the moon phase functionality of the controller. Personally, having played with the combination of Storm X and Nano Box Mini Tide, I wouldn't order this combination without seriously considering the addition of a third channel to handle the moon phase duties.

So far I think the OP's conclusion is spot on.

I just bought a Mr Aqua 12'' cube tank looks like these will work great on it.

I think this is a great unit when coupled with the Coralux controllers. I'm very pleased with the functionality, no complaints so far. I'm not a big fan of lightning so I have not played with that feature yet so can't really comment on that. It probably just freaks the fish out and I have an open top tank so prefer that my fish are not startled unnecessarily. I have 3 kids that handle that for me.

I'm contemplating a user thread in the nano reef forum.

wow i wonder if he can create something like this for a larger tank

I'm sure he can build just about anything you might want. Loving this little fixture coupled with the Storm X. No problems with either. I have some zoas and rics under it so far and all are doing well. Took a break around the holidays. Will get some more corals into QT after the 1st of the year.
