Naso Tang

Well, I have some bad news. I lost my naso yesterday. The naso had been QT'd for at least 4 weeks and showed no signs of disease. It was added to the main tank about 3 weeks ago. It has been fine and eating well. I came home last night and found in half eaten in the sand. I tested my water today. Nitrate 0, nitrite 0, ph 8.0, ammonia .25 (which I think is from the dead fish. Calcium 440. I've been doing 10% water changes every week, the ASM G2 skimmer is working great and everything else seems to be fine. I really don't know what happened.

My power went out last Friday for about 3 hours but I doubt the temperature dropped more than a degree or two.

My current fish in a 125 with mhs and vhos are: sailfin tang, 2 perc clowns, red firefish, purple firefish, blue hippo, 2 green chromis, six-line wrasse, a bunch of snails and crabs, a couple of brittle starfish. I have a bunch of zoos, mushrooms, soft corals, clam, brain, etc.

I feed every other day with emerald entree, brine shrimp, cyclopeeze. The other days I feed DTs and shrimp and/or scallops.

Earlier in the week I lost a Rusty Angel (which I pretty much expected since it was the healthiest to begin with).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Carrie

Carrie,

Sorry to hear about your Naso. What a bummer. I have no suggestions. It sounds like everything is top notch in your tank. Maybe just a freak occurrence.

I don't know. I haven't lost anything in a long time and the tank is pretty stable.

Here's a picture of him:

He was cute. I am sorry to hear it. I get pretty attached to mine. I just cant figure out anything that could have happened based on what you posted. Does anything look out of place? Maybe a rock fell on him, or got stuck somewhere?

Yeah, I get pretty attached too. Nothing out of place. I'm missing some zoos but I suspect its the foxface that has taken a liking to them. Can fish get food poisoning???

Carrie,

I've experienced similar bad luck with Naso tangs. Over the past three years I have tried a Naso three times. Two were 4-6" and the third was only 3". Both the larger ones did great in my 125 reef for a month or so and then suddenly died. They ate everything I gave them...flake, frozen and nori and then suddenly went belly up. They weren't harassed by the other fish at all, so I don't know what happened. The smaller Naso never made it past the quaratine stage.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Did anyone here that lost a Naso use any medications in quarantine? From what I've read Tangs need the assistance of bacteria in there intestines to help with digestion.
