I have just perchest a derosa clam. I need any info to keep these very cool guys alive and happy. Im looking for care, lighting, what to feed, ect. I bought this and the lfs said to feed it light and marine snow(i think she ment that. She just said "snow" so im just asuming.) It needed 5 current, 8-10 light, and its hardyness is 7. I have:
2 PC's 65wt w/ reflector and 3 fans included
2 PC's 65wt (Actinic) w/ reflector and 3 more fans inclueded
I put the clam in the sand at the bottom The bottom has the most light out of the whole aquarium. I positioned the lights more in the front to make room for my VHO's 196wt tube light when i get the mu-lah. The tank dementions are:
langh= 48 inches
width= 16 inches
hight= 24 inches.
The levels are fine(well, perfect i might add), i give it around 5-6 current and 8-10 light. I feed it DT's phyto plankton and marine snow. I put 2 capfulls of phyto plankton in every3 days and 2 capfulls of marine snow every other day. WAIT!!!!!!!! I read once that Strontium and Molybdenum can be harmful to clams. I use the kent Marine kind. I put 1 1/2 capfulls in every sunday and wensday. Is this/ or will this hurt the clam? I also add many other things. Any info would help with this. I am sorry if i asked rather too many questions. well, i just want this to live and grow and learn as much as i can. This is what this hobby is most about...right? Her is what i add to the tank:
1 1/2 capfulls of iodine everyday
1 1/2 capfulls of coral-vite every week
1 1/2 capfulls of essential elements every week
4 capfulls of pro buffer DKH every day
*all listed above were from the comp. Kent Marine.*
*all listed below are from bionic*
20ml of calcium buffer system #1 Alk every day
20ml of calcium buffer system #2 Calcium
My levels are:
Nitrate=5ppm
nitrite=0ppm
ammonia=0ppm
pH=8.3
temp=79-80
salinity=1.023
Calcium= 450ppm
Fish i have are:
1 copperband butterfly
1 blue tang
2 sunburst anthias
1 clown(moroon)
1 gobie.
Yeah. Alot of fish. Well, so far my tank is doing great so why worry?
Thank you so much for all your help :)

Clammysosa,

My advice would be to read a nice article by Dr.Ron in this month
reefkeeping mag. available on this very site.It's about adding all those elements. IMO, doing water changes provide all those and then some.Your lights probably be fine,once you upgrade them.
Although this highly debatable topic and I personaly believe that MH are more sutable for keeping clams happy when they mature.
All your other param. seems OK, I would check for all those elements you add and see if you really need them.It's very easy to overdose this without checking and testing.

Good luck with your derassa.

Gene.:)

Here is mine.

Thank you for your relpy. Well, i did order a magizine last week called Reef Keeping. Actualy, it was a present. Im not sure if it was by Dr.Ron, I just got the filled out subsription all my friend mailed it in. I will tell you more about it when it comes. But most of all, thanks U! I am going to do mmmmmmm, about 10 gallons a week. I dont think i really need to though. I have only done about 5 10 gallon changes in only about 1 year. I hardly ever do them. Only when something gets high(such as the trate) and then i mostly do changes. I will look on the bottle now and see what i dont need. :)

When I've said read the article,I ment to read it online on this site.Look on top of page and you'll find a link there.My advice also would be to up those water changes as I think it's very decieving to just changem for high nitrates.There is other elements that build up in our tanks that needs to be corrected,hence the water changes.May I also give you this advice,read alot and look arround this site,as I think this is one of the best boards I ever been to.Visit other forums like chemistry forum,ask Dr.Ron forum and general reef discation forums and I'm sure you'll get great advice there.

Good luck to you.

Gene.

Guys, This person is not telling you the truth about anything. Until he (Mr Bubbles) can do so its not worth you troube.

Read some of his threads (AKA Mr Tentacles on this BB)
