i fell in love with the heniochus diphreutes(reef safe) species. i've been looking everywhere for them and trying to not mistaken them or H. acuminatus which is not reef safe at all.

anyways, i bought one today from capital city aquarium in sacramento and the guy there specifically told me that the specimen that i bought was a reef safe H. diphreutes and not the H. acuminatus. just put him in my tank a few hours ago. he's already out playing with his other tank mate, but i did notice him nipping at some of my zoo's. no significant damage because they'd open up after a few minutes.

but i was wondering if anyone out there has pictures and can state the difference between the two species for me. the difference between the two species is really confusing to me. and the last thing i want is to mistaken this new addition to be reef safe. thanks.

Look at the split between the black and white stripe. It should be even right at the pointy end of the fish, if the white is higher you got the wrong one.

i really do think i got the wrong one. so far he's not picking at anything but next week when my girlfriend goes back to sac, i'm going to return him to fish store.

i feel bad right now, he's not eating anything...brine, flakes, mysis, or even nori. any ideas?

That's not a good sign as Heni are usually very good eaters, is there anything in the tank that would be bothering it?

just a two inch blue tang but they're swimming together. no frayed fins, nothing like that. besides that i have a clown goby, cleaner shrimp, and a chromis. that's it.

but just in case, what should i be feeding him anyways?

Try putting inshould mussel or clam on an a half into the tank. He should pick at that. Was he eating at the store when you got him?

What will they eat in a reef! I just added one! I read that they dont bother corals!

say goodbye to all of your lovely feather dusters;) , mine hasn't done anything really, he's really active but he won't eat. when he first was introduced in the tank, he was nipping at zoo's but that's about it.
