need quiet external pump

I currently have a GenX Mak4 (older model), which pumps a little more than I really need, and it's a little too noisy for my son's bedroom where the tank is. I have been researching pumps, and am still a little uncertain as to which one to buy.

I have a 150g freshwater tank with a wet/dry sump underneath. It was originally made for an internal pump, but whoever owned it before drilled it for an external pump.

I've heard the Poseidon models create too much heat, but are very quiet. Someone recommended the Pan World or Blue Line models (same company?), but I haven't seen much feedback on them. Iwaki seems so much like what I have. I know they have a good reputation, but I don't know that they are much quieter than what I already have.

Has anyone tried the Coralife Turbo Sea models?

I also read that submersible/inline models tend to leak if used out of the water, so that's out of the question.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

panworld works great. I have one on my 125 and its very quiet. Its the one 50 pxx version. I throttle it down and its still quiet.

No complaints here.

I just got a Sequence UNO Tarpon to replace a Mak5 and it is very quiet. It is definitely much quieter than the gen-x, and is even quieter than the overflows.

can any of the poseidon users chime in? I'd like to know as well, as I'm trying to find a replacement for my mak4.

or those who have used both a poseidon and blueline/panworld and compare the db difference?

Sorry to hijack your thread rtmelendez but i'm in the same boat as you...

The poiseidon/silent seas/velocity line is DEAD silent. The only way to tell they are on is to feel the heat and see the water flow.

The panworlds that are iwaki 40 and smaller equivalents are quite reasonable to pretty darn quiet b/c they either have no fan or a very small fan. At the iwaki 55 equivalent size they become quite noticable.

Sequence Darts and the smaller Unos are very reasonable on the noise side. Small whirring noise usually not noticable over the overflows etc...

Coralife turboseas are repackaged panworlds (blueline hd, etc...all the same pump)

I like eheims if they will fit your flow needs. Reliable externally used and quiet (I use one on my office tank)

If you got the $$ the Red Dragons are impossible to beat as a combo of silence, low electrical consumption and negligible heat transfer.

I bought mine as a Velocity T4 and that thing was completely silent!! It did add a bit of heat to the tank, but not too big of a deal in my tank.

I was thinking about the eheims, but I was worried about the leakage factor. Anyone had any trouble with leaky eheims used externally?

I am noise sensitive and the Eheim 1262 is VERY silent and should effectively replace your Mak4. It did for me! I've had mine running for only one week, so cannot talk about long term leak problems. I did, however, use some aquarium silicon to make sure I sealed the inlet and outlet. I would also recommend you consider hard plumbing it and replacing the hardware it comes with in that regard. There are posts elsewhere in this regard. For instance, check out mine about picking the pump--look on the last page:

I just purchased a velocity t4 pump used off a guy here at RC. I haven't gotten it setup yet but my understanding is it is extremely quiet.

Captiveoceans.com
Finsreef.com

The flow charts are on the royal exclusiv website (see link on captiveoceans) but they lie. The pumps do better than those charts. Those charts are based on euro hz/voltage. Add about 20% for flow in the US

I second the Velocity pumps. I have 2 of them running, and you cant tell they are running unless you touch them.

True that it adds heat to your tank, so plan to compensate for that.

which one would you guys get the Velocity 3 or the Sequence Dart?
My understanding V3 is quiet...how is the dart?
how hot is either one?
and where is the best place to buy one at the cheapest price?

The Dart is a much larger, bulkier pump than the velocity. It uses much larger caliber plumbing (2" intake, 1.5" output) and flows a lot more water. It is quiet, but not silent. It transfers some heat, but given the flow it can provide it's more than reasonable.

The velocity is silent. It can transfer relatively significant amounts of heat. It uses 3/4" plumbing I believe.
