Why do my sps have excellent polyp extension, better in the daytime, but barely grow at all ( very very slow.) They also have alright color. I know i have some extra nutrients in the tank can that cause it? Ive had my monti cap for about 4-5 months now, has awsome color and PE but hasnt grown really at all. I keep all my parameters stable by testing and dosing every couple of days. Only thing that sometimes changes is alk, but not by much, maybe .04 dkh.

It could be one of many things or a combination of them, it's hard to say without more details. All I can offer is what helped in my tank. We noticed a slightly shadowed area and adjusted our reflectors to spread the light better. One coral that has only grown a little in 8 months has doubled the amount of new growth in a matter of weeks due to better light disbursement.

I'll let someone more experienced answer that with a yes/no answer. In my tank lowering the phosphates helped reduce the cyno and improved the color but I didn't notice any change in growth.

Just out of curiosity where in Bergen county are you? I grew up in Haworth.

will phosphates cause lack of growth.

Hey fellow Jerseyan! I'm in southern part of state outside Atlantic City. As for your question regarding phosphate....yes, a high phosphate reading (greater than .03 can inhibit coral calcification. I've read this on many other posts and I believe there are some good articles in the Reefkeeping Magazine archives on this issue.

You can try running some GFO through a reactor, look into carbon dosing with vodka, and/or start feeding less. Dripping some Kalkwasser can help precipitate phosphate too. Hope this helps.
