Wow I am very excited - this is what I think is my first truly nice lens. I haven't played around with it much yet, but it passed my focus test and at least doesn't have any front/back focusing issues that I read about on some of the photo forums. I also picked up a set of Kenko tubes and a lens hood for my 100 macro and 50 1.4. YAY!!

Nice pick up Eli. Post some pics after you get comfortable with it...

Yep, awesome lens. Im going to pair mine up with a 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS lens soon or maybe a 100-400mm or maybe a 400mm prime, or... OK I'll stop, Im driving myself nuts know, lol. Congrats. on you "L" purchase.

Definitely jealous. My first 'L' was the 70-200 f/2.8L (non-IS), amazing lens. I use it all the time, but now that my tank is up I wish I had bought the 180mm L macro. Oh well, I told the wife I want the 100mm macro for my b-day, she said ok!!!!

my first L lens was the 80-200... the old black non-IS one. still have it and still love it :D

Although the lens is not really wide enough for the 20D, in my opinion, that is an excellent lens and I'd love to have one.

Let me know how the Kenkos turn out with your 100mm Macro.

My first L was the 70-200 f/4. What a great starting "L" lens. It was definitely lighter than the 70-200 f/2.8 IS that I replaced it with.

Try the 17-40 too. I love the fact that Canon made less expensive options with the same superb optics- not as fast but still very awesome.

I have actually had the 17-40 since around the time it came out, and it has been my everyday lens since (and I love it) but is definitely a bit annoying at times that it is fairly slow. My next lens will definitely be the 70-200 :)

I actually did do one test of the macro taking a pic of my eye with all of the kenko tubes stacked.

I absolutely love it. I got this on the recommendation of a coworker (his site if you want to see http://www.peterparkgallery.com) and looked at about 6-8 different ballheads in a local shop. I liked the size, weight, construction, layout of this compared to the other ones I saw (and price), and my only complaint (not even about the ballhead itself) is that the cam doesn't come machined with the base made to fit the quick release. The ballhead has actually been one of the things that has helped spur my increasing interest in photography, because it makes things so easy to setup and tweak. Two thumbs up in a big way. With all that said though, I had previously only used low end tripod heads that were fairly labor intensive to adjust and haven't really used other ballheads for any significant amount of time, so keep my comments in perspective. What do you use?

Can anyone make a recommendation for a good 77mm UV/protective filter that is suitable optical quality to match the new lens?

Amen, sweet rig you have there.

Eli, give 2filter.com a try. I would recommend B+W Pro series filters (4mm). They are pricy but as you know it makes no sense putting cheap glass in front of a lens like that.

Sweeeet Lens Dude ! Good luck with it .

That is a serious tripod too , I need one badly . Mine is a cheapy from PC Richards .

can't wait for the images you will produce with it .

I've been a Kirk man since I first decided to get serious about photography. I was gonna get the Arca-Swiss but when I called Really Right Stuff to order it (and plates) the guy was such a jerk I decided not to give him my business and ended up with the Kirk. I'm perfectly happy with it.

Hoya Pro1 series are just fine. They are what I use on my 70-200.

Congrats on the new purchase. I find the full stack of kenko + EF25 + 1.4x TC to be too unstable for field use, plus it's too dark unfortunately.

My first "L" lens was the 70-200/2.8 IS and now I recently purchased a 24-70/2.8 from a photographer on FredMiranda.com and it turned out to be a dud - the USM motor was squeaking from one end and it was very soft wide open.

Good luck with the lens and let us know how it works for you :)

Don't you find that the tubes all stacked with a lens seems to make the front end of the lens "sag" a little due to the weight. I get afraid when I stack all 3 tubes & 70-200 f4 on my rebel xt. I should get the tripod collar.
