new clam question

I introduced a 2" maxima to my tank on Thursday (9/12/02).It was sold to me as tank raised, and from a fairly reputable source. It came from under (2) 175w MHs and looked fine, facing straight up from the sandbed; however, it was only in this holding tank for a couple of days before I aquired it. Before this, I believe it was under VHOs in another holding tank, but I don't know for how long, and I don't know what light it was originally raised under. I put it under my 250 w MH, in the sand, and by saturday it had used it's foot to push itself onto its side. This is my first clam so I don't know if this is normal behavior. Might this be a reaction to too much of an increase in light? I'm not sure if I want to put it through the stress of being frequently moved around the tank. Might this simply be the clam getting fed up with being constantly jumped from tank to tank and never having the opportunity to adjust? If so, what would be the appropriate course of action (duh, don't move it again)?

Clams have a tendency to move about. the most logical reason why it moved to its side is due to current, either to strong or possibly to weak.
Are the crabs, snails fish that might be disturbing it?
As you know do not set clam on ledge or live rock, substrate is best. Give it some time to acclimate as well.
Enjoy your new addition, clams are the greatest.

Actually I disagree with aquacyn. Maxima's are quite happy attatched to a rock and do not need to be on the substrate. They can be kept on the substrate but they can also be very happy in the rocks. I have found my maxima's (I have 6) to do both. I have a couple that will walk around until they find a rock to attatch to. If I move them back into the sand they will walk around again until they find a rock. I have two others that are attatched to small pieces of slate just under the surface of the sand, and another two that are perfectly happy in plain old sand.

Just pay attention to your clam and make sure he doesn't get buried by some critter or fall in a hole. Other than that, he'll find a place that he likes. Good Luck. ;)

So then that is to say, let him be, sideways or not? Also, should I be planning to move the clam upwards in this 55, or will it be fine on ground level under a 250w MH? thanks for your response.

I would straighten him up, maybe put him next to a rock in case the light is brighter than he's used to. The 250 MH should be great once he gets comfortable. Clams do take some time to acclimate to different lighting sometimes. In the long run, he should be very happy on the sand under your 250 MH as long as you have a standard 55. Good Luck.

The maxima continues to lay itself on its side after I upright it. Has anyone found this behavior to stop after a while, and if so will the clam upright itself?

the maxima continues to lay himself on his side. i stopped standing him upright, and he has kept himself on his side for well over a week. it's color isn't looking so good, and of course his mantle isn't fully extended. any suggestions?

Mine is doing the same thing. The Squamosa and Derasa have no problem staying straight in the sand, but my new Maxima want to lean. I have only had him one day, but ???
