Yeah, I don't know about burying the base into the sand like that. Your best bet in mounting them would be to epoxy the base to a rock. Since the base is buried, it's assured that it will die from down there and may creep upwards.

The specimen you have is Diodogorgia nodulifera or yellow sea rod, and definitely not an easy coral to take care of, although it can be done...you will want to take it out of the sand ASAP, I know a lot of LFS display gorgonians like that but it is very bad and the coral will eventually start to decay. Use a 2-part underwater epoxy and mount it to a rock in an area with decent current but lower light. It is not photosynthetic so the lower light just helps to cut down on the crud that will grow on the surface, and the current also helps to keep the crud off. If too much algae grows on the surface you can gently remove it off with soft brush. You need to feed it regularly otherwise it will slowly waste away and die. Try feeding things like baby brine shrimp, oyster eggs, cyclop-eez, crushed up flake food soaked in coral supplements, and other products designed for plankton eaters. Good luck, it is a beautiful coral and if you pay attention and meet its needs it can grow and do well...unfortunately most people don't meet their needs though.

Hi,

That is a beautiful coral. I got the same gorgonia, about the same size as yours too a few months ago. I think I got it for like $19.99.

I bought a red one also that didn't open up until I had it for close to 2 months. So far, my gorgonia has been doing well from what I can tell. I feed cyclopeeze and phyto powder 3-4 times a week. Not too big a deal because I just dump the food into the tank.

Hope that coral does well for you.
Sam

it was my understanding that they can't eat cyclopeeze bc it is too small for them. I feed my tank cyclopeeze and my yellow gargonian has been doing terrible for months and is slowly dying.
I have mine placed in the sand, which I will remove, and it has a dedicated powerhead. Garfs tells you how to feed it, but I can't find the flake food required to feed it that they use

I have a ribbon gorgonian that is doing well on DT's oyster eggs, but its polyps are a lot smaller than that gorgonian's. I haven't heard cyclopeeze is too small before, but it is possible. I did read that in public aquariums that fed their jellyfish solely cyclopeeze the medusa shrank over time, so it works well as part of a feeding regimen but not as the sole diet.

k i took it out of sand and superglue gelled the bottom to a piece of rock. i already dose my tank with photoplex... i guess i'll add 1 more to dosage.

I am not sure if the gorgonia I have eats cyclopeeze, but that is what I put in my tank when I feed my blastos.

I also feed the dried phyto powder.

Thanks,
Sam

3.Diodogorgia - #2. Yellow Finger gorgonian
This is one of two easy to grow predatory Gorgonians. This coral needs to be fed at least twice each week, but it has such large polyps that feeding them is not difficult. We use a simple to make food for all of our new research on predatory corals.

INGREDIENTS:
Flake fish food - 1 tablespoon
SeaChem Reef Plus - 4 tablespoons
Fresh water - 1/4 cup

Soak the flake food in the Reef Plus for one hour and then add the fresh water. Puree the mixture in a blender for several minutes.
After you allow the mixture to set for several minutes you can pour the smallest particles off with the water. The larger particles will settle to the bottom of the glass and they can be used to feed the Gorgonians.

bergamer:

Tropical Oasis (Frank) at Alhambra is the offical seller for SeaChem stuff. I believe he has all the SeaChem items in stock at all time (almost). Check him out if you got time.

You don't have to use just reef +...any generic "all-in-one" coral supplement should do the trick. And also it is best not to just rely on the flake food, a variety will be the best in the long run.
