I bought this coral That My LFS called a Green Polyp Leather but If you ask me it looks more like a toadstool to me. Any comments or suggestions on caring for this variety of coral would be appeciated. The polyp extention seems very sporadic. It seems to open and close thru out the day. Is this normal? Does it look healthy to you?

words like "leather" and "toadstool" are just common names and are really very generic. It looks like a Sarcophyton species of some sort to be sure. It looks perfectly healthy from here, I wouldn't be too concerned about the polyp extension. Nice coral by the way.

Here is another picture showing its placement and size , about 3 inches wide

The rarer green polyp toadstools have stems which are as green as the "flowers" themselves.

i photoshopped it abit to enhance the colours to what you see with your eyes. even then, its greener than the picture depicts.

Yes, they are beautiful corals. I am sorry I did not by one sooner.I actually noticed some growth in the short time I have had it!

Yes that is a good polyped toadstool coral in the genus Sarcophyton. Be sure to keep it in an area of the tank that has high light and med/strong water flow. These are necessary to the long term health of the coral.
