Well, i picked up a bunch (20lbs) of live rock today, and it had all kinds of critters growing on it. Do i need to invest in a new ligth to keep these guys alive or will my stantard light that came with the tank do? heres a pick of the stuff:

if i do it would really be helpfull if you could post a link of what i need to upgrade to.
thanks

the tank is a 30g tank, its dimensions are 30x12x18. the lighting i have now is just a regular ol florecent light that came with the tank.

the brain (lower part of the picture in the middle-neon green) will need more light. actually, all of it would need a little more light... unless the rust/red colored things are SPS, you can easily get away with PC lights. If the rust/red colored things (right hand side of picture, halfway up... and I think theres some at the top on the left side) are soft-touch them!!! they are possibly shrooms, and can do ok with PC...

but the brain will need a little more lighting than the rest of it, IMO

ok, the brain, was not included with the live rock, and was sold to someone else. but yes, everything else is soft, and hides when you touch it.
any suggestions on a new light? would a new bulb work ok? i love the way the coralife 50/50 bulbs look.

1st suggestion... DONT TOUCH hahaha
and yes the rest of those will need more light.... i know, i know this is the worst way to gauge it, but you need about 3-5watts per gallon

I wish I could get LR that looks like that! :)

Are you sure your tank is a standard 30gal? From you picture, it looks like the tank is an Oceanic "cube" which is 30gal but has an 18" x 18" footprint.

In any case, you'll need more light as the other posters have mentioned. I would consider a 2 x 65 W Power Compact or something similar like 4 x 24 W HO T-5 or even a 150W halide kit.

If getting flourescent bulbs, mix 10,000K and actinic bulbs, or get all 50/50 bulbs.

the tank in the pic is the tank which i got it from. it was a small cube, and the one im putting the rock into is the 30g.

theop-you mentioned some new lights in your post. any chance you could provide some links as to which ones would work out the best?
thanks

:D I got great lights from hellolights.com

they have all-pc, t5, and MH. measure the length of your tank, and get on there, finding the perfect light for yourself.

my tank is 22", so I got 24" lights. then, since my tank is a hex, I decided to put the lights corner to corner instead, and they work SO AWESOME!!!!

actually your tank is a 29 gallon. 30 gallon standard tanks are 36 inches long. 29's are 30 inches long. Not that big a deal, just thought id let you know.
