New Mantis--ID Help Please!

Woohoo! just won this mantis on E-bay for $20! It will be arriving tomorrow morning, at which point i will be able to get better pics.
for the meantime, does anyone have any preliminary ideas on ID? It is a smasher, but that is all the info i have for now.

sweet! thanks for sharing the pic of your wennerae :) if you have any pics of the whole tank, i would like to see your setup!
i was hoping it would turn out to be a wennerae (hard for me to tell without seeing the meral spots). i really like my L. macs and my chiragra, but it would also be nice to have a mantis that is more interactive. i like to see more of them than their googly little eyes!
so i am assuming that if i keep a lot of macroalgae in his tank, he will have a better chance of staying that electric green--am i right?
 
I think that Wennerae change colors according to light, not surrounding environment. Roys list say that they will turn green in a molt or 2 under fullspectrum lighting.
 
hey medellia I chanced to look at your signature and am i reading i correctly? It look like you have a pair of peacocks (a nono) in a 12 gal (another nono), and a G. chiragra in a 5 gal (another nono).

that is good to know on the lighting. i have full-spectrum lighting, so hopefully he will stay that bright green!

actually i need to be more clear with the signature...they are Harlequin Shrimp (Hymenocera elegans). i WISH i had a pair of peacocks!!
why do you say that it is a no-no to house the chiragra in a 5 gal? Roy's list recommends a 5-10 gal for adults, and my chiragra is pretty small at this point(under 2"). however, i definitely plan on upgrading her tank as she grows :)
 
ahh harlequin shrimp, lol, ive actually thought about doing a star and harlequin nano in the future myself, they look so cool.

Hehehe even if i did have a pair of peacocks, i wouldn't put them together. They'll kill eachother as will most commercially available mantids in the same tank.

ok my bad on the chiragra. 5-10 is ok on the ID site, especially at 2 inches. Just keep in mind though that when you upgrade, i would definitely recommend acrylic or at least very thick glass because a large angry chiragra is one of the mantids who are known for smashing glass. I would also give her over 10gal myself.
 
yeah, the harlequins are a lot of fun. i have had my pair for a while, and i have them eating frozen/thawed starfish pieces. makes it much easier to keep them happy :) i have been working on trying to raise up some of their larvae...that would be pretty cool.

yeah, i agree with you on the peacocks. it would be cool to have a pair, but i would definitely not put them together! i started out trying to find a peacock as my first mantis, but now i am up to 4 of them and still no peacock. to me, they are the ultimate mantis shrimp. i would not mind having more than one, either...oh well...one of these days...

yep, i would not dare put the chiragra in a glass tank! she is in an acrylic tank now, and i am looking for a nice larger acrylic to upgrade to. after watching her crush turbo snails into powder and hearing her cracking away while renovating her cave, there is no way that i would trust her in a glass tank! and i can only imagine how much stronger she will be when she is twice this size...
 
ciliata is what i thought when i first saw the pics on e-bay, but it turned out to be a little smasher instead. it was shipped in this morning. because of the white meral spot, i am thinking wennerae...and it is a female. here is a pic of her acclimating before going into her new home. i can't believe what a bright, translucent green she is! makes it kind of hard to photograph. i will (hopefully) get some better pics soon as i get used to this new camera, and as she gets settled in a bit better :)

thanks for the kind words! glad you like my new little bug. it is so cool to have a mantis that is more active, and that comes out of her den to watch me as i am watching her! i really like her personality. it is a nice change from my reclusive chiragra.
speaking of the chiragra, i think the she is going to molt. she has not eaten or even peeked out of her den in a week, but i can hear her doing construction somewhere in the rock. makes me wonder what she is up to, and wish i could spy on her somehow.

back to the new mantis--here are some updated pics! she is in a bucket here so i could get some full shots of her, and i will also try to get some good shots of her in the tank...
